Fish food adventures...

Posted 01/12/2010 at 09:33 PM by maysorum

Yesterday, I had a culinary adventure and made some fish food. I took a trip to the local Asian market and got some squid, shrimp, sea urchin, and scallops. I looked for fish and lobster roe but it's not in season.

I removed the head, innards, and clear quill from the squid. The ink sac was already removed, thank goodness! Then chopped the squid up in the food processor and dumped it into a large mixing bowl. Next I cleaned the shrimp which was much grosser than the squid—I was not a fan of the orange goo (brains?)! I combined the shrimp, scallops, sea urchin and chopped them up too. I combined all of the ingredients together, gave it a final mixing, put it in a Ziploc, and froze it flat.

And now, I have home-made fish food. The fish seem to enjoy it, but still seem to favor Spirulina Brine Shrimp. I'm happy to have something to supplement their diet as they didn't seem to care for mysis. Both the Long Spine Cardinalfish and the Anthias are eating extremely well—I'm happy and the coral are too!

This fish seem to enjoy the home made mixture more and more! It almost seems that it's their new preferred food—yippee!

I'm also going to try New Life Spectrum pellets for a more complete diet. Also, I do want to go on vacation someday and having an automatic feeder will be very helpful!

P.S. None of the fish like Urchin; however, the corals seem to love it!
