Days 1-4: Rocks, Sand & Water, Oh My! Filling the Tank

Posted 09/26/2012 at 09:03 PM by sweetyness

I placed a couple dry rocks in the bottom of the tank, then scooped cups of rinsed sand around it:

Then I added the new live rocks I brought back from the LFS and filled with 15 gals. of Catalina Sea Water:

I only wanted an inch of sand, but it came out to almost 2" using approx. 35 of the 40lbs. Not sure if this will be an issue keeping it clean. Water cleared some the next day:

I wasn't able to add the rest of the water for 2 days. I took a couple pounds of sand out, not a huge difference. I like the look, just hope it won't be too hard to keep clean. I do use under sand Nassarius snails in my CUCrew.
I added some dry & live rock rubble to the 2 rear chambers that will be the refugium (I'll add more rubble and chaeto later):

I decided to go bare bottom since the opening to the pump is on the bottom, and it would just be too hard to clean.
Next day water is clearing:

For the first few days I put the sponge filters back in to catch any junk from the sand & live rocks, but as you can see they didn't catch much:

Sorry for all of the pics. I want to catalog all the steps and also get feedback along the way if there is a better way to do it! Comments welcome! (09.16.12 to 09.19.12)
