Some new rules!

Posted 02/01/2014 at 01:35 PM by zitra

I think I have learned one new rule this week.

"Before any chemical experiments, check some physics." or "Before fixing things with supplements, try some water changes."

I have been somewhat concerned about my alkalinity dropping during the first week. I was looking for complicated solutions and in the end the simple one fixed it. It seems. I have done couple of 15% WC, and things are settling down nicely.

But lets start with our old...

Many things about this hobby are not as hard as people are inclined to think...

...and it's useful to know these aren't magical rituals, but processes with purpose.

1. Cycling. 2+2=4 with most critters, but with bacteria, 1=2. They divide and multiply under favorable conditions, and fortunately their 'favorable' is pretty broad. To hasten cycling a wee bit, keep your tank temperature a steady 78 degrees and keep the water circulating to move the water around. You can 'ghost-feed' your tank a few flakes of flake food a day, which will supply any nutrient NOT provided...

Chemistry Mystery

Posted 01/26/2014 at 10:39 AM by zitra

So I have gone through my first chemistry puzzle. I call it "The Vanishing Alk".

As I wrote yesterday, my Alk was coming down hard over the first week of the system life. From the initial 3.66 meq/l to 2.35 meq/l after some six days. While I noted the Ca was very high at around 600 ppm.

After reading numerous pieces of information, understanding the story of CaCO3 precipitation, I have guessed that the high Ca is precipitating in the tank (indeed there is...
