I would like to hang it as i have a kit but im not sure the best height. its currently about 4 or5 inches about water level. i.e. legs on light. it seems to like most picures i see of tanks many are about a foot above water. I wonder if i would have better growth if i hung mine at a level closer to that. Any suggesions would be much appreciated. thank you

Hi guys. I have a small frag of the tiny little blue clove polyps and I've been away for the week and I've had someone trustworthy looking after my tank. Now for the question.

The clove polyps seem to be smaller than they were before I left and unless I remember them wrong it seems there are less of them almost as if they just melted away. I just checked all of my water parameters and all is as should be. I'm no newb so I know it's where it should be. I had pc lighting until today when I found a steal at the lfs.....a $700 halide fixture for only about $250....brand new. Couldn't pass it up. Anyway the new light has nothing to do with the problem I just wanted to brag. Only thing I could think is maybe this kind of coral needs higher light? But then again maybe I just want to remember them being more than what they were. But I swear there were more of them when I left. Any ideas?

I am starting to think that less is more when it comes to lighting. I have a coralife HQI fixture with 250w MH, four 96w PC's, and moon lights. I have always replaced my bulbs every six months or so and lately have been reading about a lot of reefers decreasing their photo periods and so i am wondering what would be the effects of just replacing my MH lights every six months and letting the pc lights go until they stop working.
I know a lot of people who only run MH lighting with great success....and a ton of coral farmers only use MH lighting. So I have come to the conclusion that our supplement lighting is more for us as viewers than really for the coral health/growth.
I have put this thought to the test on my 210 and it seems to be giving me pretty good results.....but it has only been one year with the pc lighting so I am going to give it some more time and see what results I get as the pc's get older. I would say that I have a lot better color with the older pc lights but my setup has a couple other variables so its hard to tell.

Hello,

My tank is relatively new (3 month old), but my Ca is high (600) since the tank was established. I'm not dosing Ca. My Alk is low (1.7) so I've been adding a spoon of Nutra Tec Marin Buffer once every three days. As far as I understood it does not increase Ca in the water.

Is this Ca at 600ppm a problem? I've read that the recommended range is 380-450 and there are warnings about low Ca but nothing specifically said about high Ca.

Tank is ~190L (50gal), I only have a crushed coral substrate (10cm), artificial LR made of crushed coral (unsure of how much, but probably around 20Kg to 30Kg), two clownfish, cleaning crew and no stony corals: only two small zoanthus colonies, one small palythoa giant button polyp colony, one small white star polyp colony. Colonies have been in the tank for slightly more than a month now, and aside form the white star polyp the others have not grown at all. In fact, as few of the zoa polyps faded away.

Should I be worried and do something about the Ca at 600, does this harm the growth of my zoas, the health of my fish, or is it not a problem? Is this naturally going to come down as I add LPS corals in the mix some day?

Thanks,

OK, my wife is asking me what I want for Christmas. I am thinking a price range $50-$150 and I should get a temp controller for my heaters. I have 2-200 watt ebo-jager heaters that I don't want to leave the temp control to the internal thermostat. To great of a chance that they will stick on any fry my tank.

What is recommended in that price range? As of yet I don't know if I will need a chiller or not.

What I need is a link to a site my wife can just click on and buy. A good way to get what I want.
Here is the site where I am getting the names of these bulbs. I bought a wave point today and keeping it simple looking at their bulbs for setups. I am mainly wanting to make sure I have the combo for coral growth that a few basic clownfish will be happy with too.
