If $7.99 per lb rock is too expensive for you, perhaps Saltwater fish is not the Hobby you should be in?

If you enjoy ragging on people for not being able to afford the most expensive rock PERHAPS you should keep your ridiculous opinions to yourself and not discourage the OP from trying out this hobby. It shouldn't be your business or of your concern if they can afford it or not.

1.5 lbs of live rock is suggested per gallon
i have a 100g tank
(1.5 lbs x 100g)= 150lbs of rock
(150 x 7.99) = $1,198.50

i dont know many people that can just drop 12 hundred dollars on rock.
maybe you could help me out azsaltman?

They have cheap rock $2 a pound. Free Shipping too.
Not a bad deal at all.

It's better to see what you're getting,I shipped some in one time and they were basically round rocks that sucked.

Get dry rock and seed with one real nice piece of premium live rock. That's what most do.

Patience and waiting for killer deals is prob the best way to get great rock for cheap too. I've gotten all but one piece of my rock off these forums. Think I have $50 total invested in about 75 lbs of rock.

swBrock 05/08/2011 12:04 AM

how long does it take for the cool stuff to spread?

HanoverFist 05/08/2011 12:06 AM

Initially, it took about 4 months for the coralline and such to start spreading in my tank.

But, now that it's matured, I removed a ton of rock and added new rock about a week ago - it's already starting to get a heavy coat of coralline.

So you just have to wait out those initial few months for the tank to mature.

I agree, this seems to be the best route and ensures that you start out minus pests!

I would recommend this link! My bro bought all his rocks from here and they look pretty awesome!

Xgame2k 05/08/2011 01:12 AM

bulk reef supply has the best dry rock. none of that dug up nonsense.

Vanpire 05/08/2011 07:37 AM

Wait on this site. There are always people selling nice live rock for good prices. $7.99 is expensive.

jerryz 05/08/2011 08:53 AM

I'm on the, if you can't afford the buy in it's not the right hobby, side. Can it done on the cheap? Sure. But you'll be behind the curve for years. Trying to catch up in one department after another. This doesn't mean buy the very best of everything all the time. But there's certainly a minimal acceptable level of functionality for anything. Drop below that and th outcome will be negative. I think this is one of the primary contributors to the high turnover in the hobby. People have an unclear understanding of the economic and time requirements before taking the plunge. Then try and find a way to leverage an outcome that fits their preconceived economic/ time model.

Go to Tropical Treasures and buy and ton of Base Rock. $1.49lb. Then just buy a few lbs of actual LR to seed the tank. And $7.99lb??? Here again go to Same place, the more LR you buy the cheaper it is, but it only starts at $6.99lb, and when you buy more than i beleive 30# its $4.99lb. Good luck. Don't buy online, the its not worth the shipping, and you can hand pick what you want locally. You can also buy off of CL, and cook the rock before you put it in the tank. Lots of choices.

Marcorocks.com. Have bought dry rock from them and they were outstanding. They sent nice pieces plus a little extra due to breakage. Also, when you purchase live rock online and get it shipped, remember a third to almost half of the weight is water weight. So you are paying not only the weight of the rock but also water weight (marine rock is very porous). My next system is gonna be pimarily dry base rock and seeded with live rock from a LFS or a very well established/mature pest free( well as pest free as possible) reef tank.

badfish 05/08/2011 11:18 AM

You dont need 1.5 lbs per gallon. Get as much as you like to make a nice looking rock scape. The 1.5-2 lbs per gallon was to help with filtration. With the skimmers and other filters they sell now you can get away with using less rock.

Also the $7.99 rock from RC is just home made rock with coralline algae. I have seen far better natural rock.

Get Dry Rock from ReefCleaners and Some LR to seed with....

I just bought 50# of BRS pukani rock. I told BRS I wanted 3-9 pound rocks.
I received 10 beautiful rocks with not one under 3 lbs and 0 broken rubble pieces. You would swear up and down there's a 100 pounds of rock in my order. It's so light and porous, I will only buy this rock from now on.

I'll get the op some pics. You wouldn't need 150 lbs, more like 100 of this stuff.
Only problem is its not live. However its very dry and you don't pay for water weight.
I received 51 lbs paying for a 45 pound order.

The two rocks are 8.5 pounds total.
The pics are front and back of the same 2 rocks.

PHXReefGuy 05/08/2011 11:43 AM

If I had to pay 7.99 a pound for all my rock I wouldn't be in this hobby either.
I also like to think the coralline covered rock in my display looks just as good without filling the tank with 7.99 a pound rock.
