Acan or favia ?

So stopped by my Lfs to pick up water and was drawn to the frag tank..it's been a while since I bought a favia or acan I would say I killed about 5 different types...I believe I either burned them or either my ex coral beuty was snacking on them..
Anyway I figure since I lowered my intensity on my lights and no more cb I give it a try on an inexpensive frag..been in the tank about 4 days and still has it's color and nice and puffy no sweepers out yet but seems good..in the past by now they would be retracted and almost looking dried out.. Question is I placed it far to the left side of the tank halfway up on a rock but like to eventually have it in the sandbed.. Do I risk stressing it by doing so..I ask because it would be blasted by my LEDs ..don't really have any shady areas in the sandbed.. Oh yea was told it was an acan but after looking at pictures It also looks like a favia ..what you guys think? Thanks Jose |
Hard to tell from the pic. How big across are the polyps?
I have several types of acans and several types of favia in my nano. I always start them out in the bottom/sand and, using frag racks, slowly move them up higher/closer to the light over the period of a couple weeks. The idea being you can cook a coral pretty fast with too much light but they can handle too little light for a while (think cloudy/rainy for a week in the reef). While the coral acclimates to the light I can get an idea of how much they like as well as how much flow they want. Good luck, hope you have better results this time. |
might be an acan echinata

Def not an echinata but maybe an acan.I had one in the past (one that I killed)and was way preetier and more colorful..
Thanks for the advise agostinone..I'm planning on moving it today just not sure if I should place it on my frag rack which is close to the led which I would be moving it up not down or just placing on the sandbed...I guess I'll try the sandbed first and see what happens..you think I'm rushing things |
Im not sure it is either. None of my acans lords look quite like that nor do my echinatas. I would just google some pics of acans and favias and see if you see anything similiar. I have some favia and favites, they don't look quite like that either. Either way I would start them off in a shaded area or on the sandbed and see if they like it.

I believe acans have individually attached heads vs favia. If that makes sense. Attachment 369953

It's almost definitely not an acan lord as it looks like the coralites are shared. Lords would inflate considerable more as well. Potentially an echinata but I think it's a favia.
You said you had it halfway up to the side. How far down would you be lowering it to put it in your sand bed? Your best bet is to leave it where it's at for a couple weeks so it can fully adjust to your lights and then move it. Less likely to burn it that way. |

Ok so I moved it to the sandbed..maybe I should've waited longer for better acclimation but me being impatient I moved him..
So after a few hours it seems to like its new location nice and puffy..I guess I'll give it a few days and see what happens..have my fingers crossed it Turns out well ..I always wanted a nice favia or acan |
looks more like a favia now than an acan to me.

From earlier today..I think it's a favia too from the ridges it's forming but still not 100% sure..happy with its new location I'll be leaving it there for good and just sit back and watch what happens..

Ok so after purchasing two more frags (an acan echinata and a Christmas favia)I now believe it's an acan..
So after a couple of days acclimating the new frags I placed them in they're new home..what you guys think? Are they getting too much light.. |

The acan before in the shade and after the move a couple minutes after..I almost want to move it back to a lower spot but really want it to work where it's located now
