Did I just get ripped off on this $800 Black Tang?

Hey guys,

This is a 1" juvenile and the seller is assuring me it will turn full black and the snout will grow.

Did I just pay $800 for a Scopas black hybrid and not a genuine zebrasoma rostratum?

I would appear that there can be a lot of variance in the exact coloring.

I hope the seller's nose didn't grow when he said that?

d-man 12/05/2018 04:06 PM

It does look like a hybrid

Now thats funny, LOL

oxymoron 12/05/2018 07:52 PM

Funny but not really helpful.

This is a 1" juvenile and I really need some concrete proof here before I cause a scene.

Does anyone have a strong analysis?

This is what a man on WWW says - <I do think this is a juvenile Z. rostratum. You can see my pix here on
WWM: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/zebrasom.htm
The white will go, and the rostratum will grow longer w/ time/size>
Please advise...Urgent as I would like to confront the supplier here with
some positive (or negative IDs) from experts in the field...
<Don't think this is a Scopas. Bob Fenner>

But I am expecting a jet black tang that looks like a stealth bomber, not some light grey variant not from Xmas island.

albano 12/05/2018 08:16 PM

scopas hybrid... I don't believe that it is a black tang.

As a juvenile it's almost impossible to say with any certainty. It's also nearly impossible to tell while the fish is stressed laying on its side in a dish or held in your hand.

Where was the fish collected? What made you trust this person in the first place and why would you not trust what they sold you now? Just because of some lightness in the black?

All zebrasoma tangs are known to do this with their coloring going lighter when they're stressed or at night when the lights are out.

To me, that fish does not look like a scopas. It also isn't black as night in the pictures you provided so I get why you're ready to try getting your money back. Honestly, if the guy said it's a black tang and, at the time, you were fine with throwing down $800 for it I'd stick with your initial gut instincts. Let the fish settle in and report back to us how it looks in good lighting with a full belly.

After complaining, I was traded for this specimen which is a little bit larger.

Would you say I have a genuine zebrasoma rostratum now?

IMHO yes.

solitude127 12/06/2018 09:06 AM

2nd specimen definitely looks more like to be part of the zebrasoma family.

Sugar Magnolia 12/06/2018 09:07 AM

Yes.

Thanks guys, I was worried about the patterns / lines near the head region but am glad to get confirmation and finally put this one to rest.

Please for the love of god survive the quarantine period:)

I don't know the answer, but I can say the 2nd fish is WAAYYY more cooler-looking than the 1st. I wouldn't pay $800 for a fish, but it looks awesome!

OurCoralReef 12/06/2018 12:05 PM

First did not second does
Good luck
Feed it lots of seaweed thats how i get them to survive but yours looks really healthy so should be good

Drae 12/06/2018 10:09 PM

Nice.

dz6t 12/07/2018 05:29 AM

The first fish was not a black tang, the shape is wrong.
The 2nd one is a black tang.
Congratulations

Based on all pics I can find I really think they both are genuine, The second is way nicer though. Good luck with it!

manateemark 12/07/2018 05:43 PM

That 2nd black tang definitely looks like the right fish. I personally am a fan of both of them, but am not sure whether I'd pay $800 for the first one. Just curious did you not see the first fish before purchasing?

ca1ore 12/07/2018 10:49 PM

FWIW, my black tang looked almost identical to the first one when it was tiny; now at 5” it looks like a black tang. Either way, if you’re going to drop $800 on a fish, the bigger one is likely to be more robust.
