Does a mantis tank need to be covered?

Mine will be here tommorrow.

I’m all set, just wondering if I need to put a cover on the tank. Google and forum searches are coming up empty.

I would everything can jump, I wouldn't want to risk loosing mine when I do find one because it jumped out just my 2cents tho

All my tanks are covered.

Having said that my peacock could technically jump out the back of the tank. It’s a 90 though so I’m not too worried about it.

He does swim all the way up the water column sometimes when the lawnmower blenny ****es him off.

The only species I've had trouble with jumping are Odontodactylids. They are probably the fastest of all stomatopods. Small species like O. havanensis can reach speeds of up to 30 body lengths a second and can leap up to 4 to 5 inches out of the water. This can happen if somethings sppoks them. Mot commonly this happens if the lights are suddenly turned on or off. If you must leave a tank uncovered, I would recommend for odontodactylids having at least 5 inches free borad.

My O. Scyllarus sometimes jumped out the water 1/3rd of it's body lenght. I never had a cover on the rimless tank and it had a water height of half an inch from the edge. A 6-line wrasse did jump out if it though..

I’m going to cover it, I’m tired of all the salt creep anyways. Thanks all!
