Clam Issue

Hi, Guys.

I’ve had four clams and now I’m down to three. Here’s the situation.

Over the 18 months I’ve had my tank I’ve gotten a a maxima first, a derasa, Squamosa, and a superblue maxima.

One day when I woke up the superblue maxima has a retracted mantel and he was gaping open, so I knew he was a goner. That was about two weeks ago. I’ve had him for about two weeks. So I chalked that up to bad acclimation or travel.

Now, two weeks later I notice that my squamosa has retracted mantle.

He looks like this

My other two clams seem to be doing ok. My maxima has been in the tank for about a year and 3 months

And my derasa for about 10

I hope I didn’t introduce some kind of clam disease when i put in the maxima. My entire tank is full of SPS and all corals are showing PE so I know my water is good.

What do you guys think?

My first thought is that the new one brought in some pyramid snails. I would check the all very closely for both snails and eggs.

Ok just looked but will check again late tonight when tank is dark. Maxima has baby nerite snails on him does not seem to bother him.

Squamosa has nothing on him I can see.

I’m gunna swap out carbon just as a precautionary measure.

Any other ideas?

Do you have a Blenny in the tank?

No, he actually died of old age recently.

This clam isn’t looking good. I really hope I didn’t introduce some kind of PM disease when I put in the superblue maxima.

Mantle extension of your health clams looks less than ideal as well.

Yeah that looks better. Do you have fresh shell growth on your clams?

Can you pick them up to inspect them? I believe that pyramid snails attack primarily thru the foot.

Also - do you by chance have another tank you could move the unaffected (as of yet) clams to until you figure this out? They are very nice looking and I'd hate to see you lose them!

Tripod1404 12/02/2017 02:23 PM

Can the clown be irritating them? By clam once closed on and crushed a clown. I stopped having clowns with clams after that.

Yes I’ll check out the foot soon. I don’t have another tank unfortunately. My nano has a huge carpet anemone and high nutrients.

I don’t think so. I’ve never seen her near anything but my derasa

How high? Clams generally like higher nutrients, they consume Nirtates.

Uncle99 12/02/2017 04:12 PM

Are you feeding phyto?
Is light sufficient?
Do you have appropriate flow?

Max loves light, others no as much

Uncle99 12/02/2017 04:13 PM

Clams are extremely efficient in filtering water!
And you have 4.

I just put in a whole bottle of phyto over the last few weeks. I run 6 T5 bulbs and two small Kessil LEDs for shimmer.

I have a lot of flow in the middle of the tank not a Ton at the sand bed most of my SPS is mounted mid way

Ok so I took the clam out and tossed him. I inspected the foot and didn’t see any pyramid snails. I only saw nerite snails. Here’s a pic.

So far other clams look fine I’ll monitor them from here on out.

So quick update today. My maxima didn’t close last night after spawning. He remained open.. mantel out.. exactly like he does during the day. Anyone know if this is normal?

Wave your hand over him and look for a closing response. He may be trying to unwind after spawning.
