Your Favorite TBS Critters?

These guys are ALWAYS a treat for me.
The beautiful and entertaining Porcelain Crab. :)
I love watching them wave their arms, catching debris in their fans.

What's your favorite?

Love them also! My new fav is a sally lightfoot crab. Creepy but intriguing.

Porcelain crabs are my favorite too. I think I got over a dozen in a 15lb package. Ha.

What is that? Looks like something from Star Wars

robgonsailing 05/11/2017 02:43 PM

Decorator crab... we call ours Megatron since we thought he looked like a Transformer.

d2mini 05/11/2017 03:04 PM

I say... Alien. :D

Here's another one of those.

Do you keep yours in your main display?

Depends. If they stick to sponges and that sort of thing they can stay. If they start walking off with jawbreaker mushrooms... that changes everything. lol

Agreed!

Mine seems to like zoas, but only specific zoas. Either that or he just likes to clip in waves and I haven't picked up the pattern yet. But he'll go after just one zoa of the multiple types I have until that zoa is obliterated.

I was wondering if there was a way to trick them into going for something that I don't care about. Maybe sticking in some macro algae every now and then just for him or something.

My red mithrax is super cool and a busy busy algae eater. I almost took him out with the forceps but only got a leg before I knew he was friendly.

Yep, pretty cool. Always grazing on something. :)

Great picture! I need a real camera.

Ambiturner006 05/14/2017 12:56 PM

Ha. That looks just like my little guy. How big is he? Mine has molted twice in the past few weeks and I'm hoping he doesn't get too much bigger.

Mine has grown a lot too.

He's one of the bigger ones. :)
The sponge is close to racquetball size.

Ambiturner006 05/15/2017 12:51 PM

Do you guys feed your critters at all? Or just let them eat leftovers from feeding the fish?

smatter 05/15/2017 01:04 PM

Mine get whatever they can when I feed. The mithrax does come right up to the pipette so I always give him a little shot. The porcelains go nuts when I stir up detritus of throw some Goniopower in. I had about three decorators but they all vanished.

d2mini 05/17/2017 05:27 PM

These also top my list of favorite TBS hitchhikers. :)
Can you see the baby Basket Starfish?
Unfortunately they don't tend to last very long in our systems. :(

Neat!

d2mini 05/19/2017 10:26 AM

Took this vid just a few minutes ago.
Anyone else have one of these?
They're a hoot to watch. He's been in my office nano for a couple years. :)

A ton, but I rarely see them. The amount of sound they produce is crazy. I didn't get a single urchin in my latest batch of live Pukani which surprised me. All of my past orders had lots. Cool video!

Ambiturner006 05/19/2017 04:39 PM

I have at least a handful. I have one that's bright yellow with an orange claw. I hear them pop occasionally but I've never been able to see it happen like that!

Do any of you dose iodine? I've noticed my decorator crabs really slowing down lately. My water parameters are great and I feed them pieces of silverside a couple times a week that they usually gobble up. I'm wondering if something else might be missing.

If needed but usually my iodine is within range.
