MJ's 150 Gal rimless reef build.
Hi everyone.
I started new tank build. It is 60"W x 30"D x 20"H which is about 150 Gal. My sump is 48"W x 24"D x 16"H (about 7" water high in normal operation), Its about 30 gal. I started my planning labout 8 months ago. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d1260fce17.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0ee1789504.jpg The design changed abit in the end, but in general i followed concept. I started with frame. I'm a cnc machinist, and i know many welders around. Because i can buy meterials cheap, making stand wasn't something really difficult. I decided to go with 4x2 & 2x2 aluminum tubes. I wanted to keep the total weight of system as low as possible. (Aluminum pipe isn't cheap. It's much more expensive than steels) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a99e09a91f.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...da792d5b7c.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...29d688ff22.jpg My friend Dug. The best welder i know :) Notice the table that we used? That is high precision table. For the size of 4'x8', its in an accuracy of 3/1000". (I dont know if it needs to be that accurate.. lol) Now time for a paint.. First i was thinking about powder coating... But me as a DIY person and like to try my own.. (Lie.. was just too expensive.. haha) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7b0cbe3d84.jpg First, i used 2 coats of red oxide prime spray. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4bf86b060f.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...100b4f6a16.jpg Applied 2 coats of Krayon Burgundy color spray. Smooth :) Will be continued.. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Guys i'm back.
Time to work on sump. I made the sump while ago.. and i didnt take many photos while working on it.. Here is the end result. Not a best finish but it will serve my needs. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...66c0e1822e.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8a56c04427.jpg Will see more details later. Next job was pannels. First i was planning to use MDF with few coats of paint. But i wanted something more durable overtime, light on weight, and something dont warp too easy. I decided to go with particle board with laminate. Sorry not that many photos i got... I'm telling you.. working with laminate sheet isn't fun.. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b5a87260e0.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3ef5667a09.jpg Hi Bori!!! :) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...995ac4dd07.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...cdba6edab1.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fddfeaab74.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bafd66680a.jpg TBH, if i ever work on pannels again, i would just use melamine board with edge tape. (It's strong enough for what we use, also much cheaper and easy to use) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d6d7642644.jpg That is it for the stand... It may look short, but it took me a long time to build. I like the way it came out and satisfy with the design. Will be continued.. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Time to workon plumbing!
I found myself that i get really lazy if my sump area isnt organized.(it's like who cares? it's mess anyway) And makes me shy to open the doors in front of anyone. My first goal was the neatness. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7da1d81511.jpg Sump snuggly fits! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f9e9c903b1.jpg Notice the 4 bulkheads from the back pannel? It was the key factor of my plumbing plan. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...af03f26927.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...49d0562263.jpg The inside cabinet is done! Time to put my tank on stand... You know it wasn't sometthing i would like to do again.. it was heavy.. 330lbs.. also full of nervous.. But i made it.. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...21fcd05b0e.jpg Continue on plumbing. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7fa4dc3356.jpg 3 of these for my synergy overflow to stand bulkheads. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c2b5f8e3bc.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e2f3fa6199.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e50754e8dd.jpg That is pretty much up to today. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7e2e5d25ff.jpg Will be continued... Your stand looks really impressive and modern. So does the tank, sump, plumbing, and everything else. Subscribed!

How did you install the bottom panel? Did you custom cut it to fit around the aluminum legs? Is it just glued in place or are you using fasteners? My next stand will use your design. Details please, details! |
Quote:
Yeh i cut the bottom piece around the leg. then screwed and silliconed around the edges .. (which i dont think necessasry.. i think all you need is silicone..) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Oh also.. when i designed for a frame, i made the bottom frame 3/4" shorter than top to insure the panel thickness. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Its for reefkeeper64 and thoes who wondering about little detail of the stand..
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...902a7805ee.jpg When i first designed the frame notice the bottom portion depth is shorter than the top portion? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Impressive build thus far. Can't wait to see this come together!
|
Thanks for the additional details about your custom stand. It's simple but so clean looking. It's easy to tell that "this isn't your first rodeo" as they say.
From your plans, it looks as though your lighting fixture will be a ATI 10x54w or 10x80w unit. Is that the case? |
Quote:
Close but its ati powermodule 8x54w t5 & 3x75w led cruster. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Will the 3x75w led cruster be inside the fixture? I'll be watching to see if you DIY that into the fixture somehow. You probably will
You didn't ask but if you are interested, SeawatecDotDe sells the ATO 10 bulb Powermodule fixtures with 110volt power. I know because I was just looking into this yesterday for myself. Here is my story. I have a 28" depth tank and own the ATO 8 bulb. I find that the 8 bulb creates some shadows in the front and back. It also looks underscale from the side. Its just a proportion issue and I'm a stickler, I know. The 8 bulb is rated for up to 30" tanks but it isn't optimal. I wish someone had told me about the 10 bulb option before I ordered the 8 bulb so I could at least consider it. Know you know what I wish I had known. |

Little bit of update related on sump..
The reason i made the sump so big was because i wanted kind of a frag area.. (Though about the refugium, but i hate the look of sump refugium. Also not gonna need it since i use either zeovit or AF) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ee044d2d63.jpg My frag holding area.. its about 17" x 15". not a huge space, but enough for what i would use. Since I bought kessil A80 when it first cameout(for no reason lol... i just liked the price) i need some place to use it.. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...52a26e656a.jpg This is where my filter media going to seat on.. Probably 2or3 of 8x8x4 marinepures.. will see.. And i though about making a lid for each column. I didnt want to spend money for new acrylic sheet, also didnt feel like spend my time for cnc cuts... I came up an idea of using router table. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...765275ce0c.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b6bd13ca57.jpg Its left over pieces of 3/8" acrylics from sump and past projects.. I just cut acrylic 1/2" bigger each sides, then used router to trim it around half of the edges. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ec721706dc.jpg It will seat like this. I like the look of it. I probably going to make them for all the openings. (Probably make a big hole for skimmer column and frag area so i dont lose the spectrum) That is it for today! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Today is my greatest challenging day for reef hobby...
Aquascape is my least favorite simply because im not that great at it... I decided to go slow and take my time for best result.. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...16a6fa5628.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fef7957509.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...619f2dd0b0.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5066c1837f.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7a1dc009d0.jpg It will be a sps dominate tank so i decided to keep it low... Also tried to lift all the rocks up as much as possible.. How i made it??? Broke the rocks into smaller pieces and epoxy/bond.. Well i tried at least... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Looking very nice! I like the over hangs, caves, and pass throughs throughout the aquascape along with the room for future growth. Can't wait to see the tank come alive LoL
