So does everyone's subscription to this thread remain intact?
Hmmmm...I guess I just added mine if it wasn't

Way to go weatherson...It's all your fault that RC is slow :P

gregt 03/19/2005 08:51 AM

I did move the subscriptions to the new threads.

joliverson 03/19/2005 05:23 PM

I read through this thread a couple months back and can't believe that it's now as big as it is. Thanks Weatherson for an amazing study in Aquarium Arts.

melev 03/19/2005 07:22 PM

Just in case GregT didn't add me, I'm subscribed.

I don't want to miss the next great Weatherson invention!

weatherson 03/20/2005 02:10 PM

Page #1 again? It's going to take some time to get used to that as it's been quite some time since this log was there. ;) To make the transition more fluid, here's the last photo from the other portion of this thread:

http://www.weatherson.com/photos/451_carbon_filter.jpg

This is of the carbon filter I built for the air inlets of my dual-Beckett skimmer. Now... to catch up a bit.

Bamm Bamm: Let me know how it works out for you on your skimmer.

douglass: I could do a series of photos but stitching several together to make a panoramic type is now out of the question. There's simply not enough space in the room for this anymore.

Lunchbucket: Thanks and I use Black Diamond carbon and even in this filter as well as in the skimmer's air outlet filter. The time frame of which this carbon needs replacing is much longer than the tank saltwater carbon filter so cost of use is not so bad.

cscr212: "Weatherson's INJECTOR PROTECTOR!"? Umm... that may not convey the proper visual required. :D

Fzech: Perhaps but with everything else, time to do so is always a factor. We'll see.

I didn't think of that! Where is our mind?

rtcpenguin 03/20/2005 03:20 PM

What is that blue wall made of?

weatherson 03/20/2005 04:05 PM

rtcpenguin: That would be textured and enamel painted sheet rock.

qwuintus 03/20/2005 08:25 PM

Hey Joe, do you have a picture with your incandescent moonlights?

I dont want to spend 4 hours looking for one pic :P so I thought to just ask you about it. Thanks.

weatherson 03/20/2005 09:09 PM

qwuintus: Keep in mind that this was taken some time ago and prior to the addition of the fourth 25-watt blue party light. With this, it's much more evenly lit.

Joe keep up the good work.. I'm working on my carbon dealie still=) Just got the prop tank online and picked up some PPE's today=)

qwuintus 03/21/2005 02:35 AM

Looks damn good for incandescents that can be found at home depot :D

Gujustud 03/21/2005 09:21 PM

carbon filter = slick

Superb work!

I can't believe I read the whole thing.... all I can say is Ouch, my head hurts. This is by far the most and probably best information I have read about setting up and maintaing a tank. Someday after I gain enough experience with my small reef tank, I will tackle an inwall tank project. And this will be the guidebook to follow.

Probably the most amazing thing about reading this thread, is that I can't come up with any questions to ask that you haven't already answered. Maybe the only question to ask is: What side of that tank do you spend the most time on, the front or the back? :)

qwuintus 03/23/2005 03:34 PM

Is this tank starphire?

weatherson 03/23/2005 04:53 PM

Bamm Bamm: Did you get to making your carbon skimmer filter yet?

qwuintus: I think the blue party lights look good also. The only real downside to them is that they tend to turn greenish in color. But at the price they are, it's nothing to replace them prior to burn-out.

Nope, it's not Starfire and I'm not missing that either. The tanks I've seen with it really didn't make a big enough visual effect to my eyes to warrant the additional cost. Of course, I am speaking of Oceanic costs which tend to be exaggerated some. Throw in Starfire and they get exaggerated severely.

Gujustud: Thanks for the kind words.

jammre: I can't believe it either. You are a courageous person. ;) The answer to your question is simple, the front side of course but it's not so bad on the backside either. ;) Thanks for the words of kindness.

Joseph

qwuintus 03/23/2005 06:04 PM

and how many of these bulbs are over your tank?

qwuintus 03/23/2005 06:07 PM

scratch the starphire question, i went back to page 1

weatherson 03/25/2005 05:25 AM

qwuintus: This page one or the other? :D I assume you asking how many blue party/moon lights. There are four of them over my tank now. I added the fourth when I added the fifth MH. They sit right between the MH pendants.

Gujustud 03/25/2005 10:55 AM

Btw, is it me, or did you upgrade the thumbscrews on the top of your skimmer?

weatherson 03/26/2005 06:13 PM

Gujustud: That's a very good eye you have there. ;) Yes, I replaced the stainless steel wing nuts with some more comfortable on the fingers plastic units from US Plastics.

So... I've been considering altering my closed loops for some time and finally acquired of a couple Penductors from KTH Sales. These are essentially venturis which increase flow when used with a fairly strong pressure rated pump. You can check out the more detailed info on their site. In the past, the only versions of these devises were rather long and unsightly. Fortunately, they've redesigned them and have reduced their length to only three inches and now produce them in the color of black.

I decided to do some experimenting to help justify in my mind that this was a worth while change. I did so on my left closed loop which includes a Iwaki 55 pump. What I did was to shoot three photos, each with air injected into the line to help visualize the flow. First, I took a shot with the previous setup of the one inch line that was split to two and then housed two 3/4" locline nozzles on each. Here's the shot of this setup and the flow within the tank caused by them.

http://www.weatherson.com/photos/453_dual_locline.jpg

Next is a shot of the single one inch line with a simple one inch elbow as the outlet.

http://www.weatherson.com/photos/454...e_one_inch.jpg

Last of all, here's a shot with the Penductor in place at the end of the single one inch line. The increase in flow was nothing short of amazing with it hitting the opposite wall at eight feet away.

Dude, you are the man!! Your tank has convinced my wife to let me get the 440gal!! Thank you sooooo much and btw you have an AWSOME tank!! I am inspired by your organizational setup and I wish I had the know how to do some of the diy you did.

RGibson 03/26/2005 08:33 PM
