Building a sump & piping
 

I'm trying to decide how I should make a sump for this 36 gal bowfront.
I'm planning on putting a 10 gal sump in the stand, but I'm not sure how I should get the water there. The only idea I have right now is the plastic sheet on the wall of the tank that helps flow the water into the sump and back up again, but would that take to much room up in a 36 gal? Some ideas would be much appreciated. :rollface:

I have no idea what this even means. You can either drill the back, and install an over flow. Or buy a hang on back overflow like I use. Eshopps makes a good one.

Water goes down to the sump via a gravity drain pipe, and a pump pushes water back up to the DT through another pipe.

I think that OP is talking about putting a piece of acrylic across the back of the display tank to create an internal overflow chamber maybe.

I've had good success with an echopps HOB overflow, and a flex-tube for the return.

I'm not sure what the point is in a 10 gallon sump though, it'd be pretty small to fit everything that you might want to in there.

Sorry, wrote that poorly. Thanks Jewlz for getting the idea though. ;) Meant to describe an overflow box.

I don't want anything going over the side of the tank like an echopps HOB overflow.
But that gives me an idea of soemthing like this.

I could make it myself since that's crazy expensive for a little box.

Flex tubing is a good idea though. Look into that.

The ten gallon is just for filtration and to put my equipment down there. Maybe put some rocks for filtration also. I wanted 10 because it's less water volume for water changes.

I used a 10g tank as a sump fuge combo and it worked well on a 20, 29 and even a 55g tank for a while. Enough space for a skimmer, fuge section and return section with a pump. Simplest way is to get hob u tube overflow box like one from Eshopps, Seaclear used to make a good as well but not sure if they are still around same goes for CPR and Reef Octopus makes a good one as well.

Just drill your tank. HOBS suck and are more prone to losing siphon and overflowing. Just yesterday I began working on my 37 gallon with a 10 gallon sump, I drilled my first hole in it yesterday to install my eshopps eclipse M. Also go with as big of a sump as you can possibly fit. A 10g sump is not really big enough for the standard 3 chamber fuge design. I made mine a 2 chamber with one baffle no fuge.

Well I could just make an overflow box out of black acrylic. My tanks a 36 gal bowfront. So if I made an overflow box 2 inches wide and ten inches long, would that be big enough? Of course I'd have groves in that to allow water flow.

Nick30G Can I see a pic of your 10 gal 2 chamber sump? Curious what a 2 chamber looks like.

Hmm I like it! Just a tip, if you put a sponge under your return pump it will make it quieter.

Thanks for the pics. Have to see how big my skimmer is before I make the sump.
