Fluconazole vs Lyngbya Cyano
 

There are several posts about using Flucanozole to eliminate Bryopsis and GHA. I decided to see if it would resolve a case of Lyngbya cyano I'm dealing with. This post is documents the progress of the test.

I did a one time dose of 15 200mg Flucanozole caplets added to 160 gallons of water. That works out to about 1 caplet per 10 gallons.

I had a TON of bryopsis and fluconazole destroyed all of it. Nothing else was harmed. I used 2,000mg in my 75 gallon/20L sump. It took about 10 days to completely work. I would recommend it for anyone who has bryopsis.

I should point out that fluconazole is only working on the Lyngbya. It isn't making a dent in a small patch of red cyano that I have in another section of the tank. That red cyano is doing fine.

I think I got cyano as a resultant of killing of the byropsis which released phosphates. That might be your case as well.

That could be. I didn’t have any bryopsis, just this soft lyngbya plague going through the tank. At this point, I’m amazed at how fast the lyngbya has disappeared. The rockwork is definitely looking better than ever.

no thats lyngbya. I dealt w/ it, blue leg hermit crabs cleared it up pretty quick. flucon worked for GHA and bryopsis for me. although, the bryopsis ddid come back a few months later. dosed flucon again and havetn seen it since (been like 5 mos)

You're welcome! Be sure to post pictures of your own progression from day 1 to day 10 or so. I have a feeling that fluconazole is effective on many forms of algae beyond bryopsis so the more involvement from others like yourself, the more variations of algae we will see put to the test. :lol2:

I think you are right. I'm no scientist but the dead giveaway it me that it isn't dinos is that there are no air bubbles on the stuff like you get with dinos. Another thing is this stuff doesn't grow on sand like dinos do either. I know it's difficult to tell it's not dinos from my crappy iphone pictures, but looking up pictures and details about lyngbya and its characteristics, I am confident enough that it isn't dinos and it likely is this lyngbya or something very similar.

It's day 7 and the fluconazole treatment is progressing well. The Lyngbya is all but gone now.

Could you follow up with postings for a few weeks post treatment? I am interested if it stays clear or only while medicating.

Jason Fox has a video out where he mentions that he uses fluconazole from time to time on an as needed basis, but he doesn't say how often that is. I'll keep you posted.

I added fluconazole to my aquarium Friday evening. Not noticing any effects so far. Fingers crossed. Here are my "before" pics (water is cloudy because I just added the fluconazole):

Those pics show major nastiness! Glad I’m not the only one. You should start seeing results about tomorrow or Tuesday. Did you dose a 200mg caplet for each 10 gallons? That was the concentration level that worked for myself. Be sure not to skim for 14 days and don’t use any activated carbon either. Use filter socks and plan to clean them every few days, I needed to. Get as much flow going in the tank as possible. Time is on your side.
