Joined the club went from a 50 to a 90g take a look pic intense
 

All these threads, especially jcp's, on 90s are funny. Seems we all gravitate to very very similar things. The 30g or so sump the koralia pumps the types of tangs we choose etc. Anyhow I had to change out my 50 since it sprung an ever increasing leak and was slowly dmging the stand. So it HAD to go.

Here is the best part. I was walking into a petco just for fun and as I walked to the fish area I saw a manager placing clearance tags on various tanks. Then AS I walked by he placed tags on an Oceanic 90 with solid maple stand AND canopy! Umm how much you say?? $385 BAM. I bought it right away. THEN I went over to my bud's pet store and he had a custom 30g sump with an ASM G2 on a display tank he had sold. Sooooo I purchased those 2 for $250 out the door! Mind you it was an EMPTY water only display!.

So here is the crap that was my 50. It was a clear for life which I drilled and purchased a custom overflow for. this pic is with the dawn T5 lights on. It had 2x150 hqi's 14k. The sump was a 29g I did myself. And boy what a load it was. I Gobbed on SO much silicone and the stupid wall still collapsed. 100lbs of LR which I have moved over and had a koralia 3 in it.

so with the help of my wonderful wife we were able to transfer everything over in 3 and a half hours after collecting all the parts.

Things I had to buy:
190 lbs of live sand from tahiti with 20lbs of it black and 20lbs crushed coral. Mind you the 50 crashed a couple times killing hundreds of dollars in corals. Only things left now is a pretty favia a rock with a bunch of Rics, a bubble coral, 1 toadstool and a rock with many bright green Zoos fuzzy greens and regular green mushrooms and about 1/3 a lobo :(. continuing...so here is the initial pic after setup

ok so the specs:
Oceanic 90g drilled will all glass durso overflow system

Pumps are 2 Koralias...a #3 and and #4....the #3 broke the shaft during cleaning on its way to the 90 so I need to call hydor for a replacement.

The return pump is an Oceanrunner 2500 which I couldn't be happier with. It's very silent and runs strong. I was using it externally to run my chiller before.

100 or so lbs of LR plus another 180-200lbs of ls. I went from a BB tank for 3 years to this and I love the look.

Lights....well as of now the 2 150's are in there BUT a Solaris Extreme pro is on it's way...should be here late this week! ( I hope) That'll keep energy costs down as well as heat issues at bay.

Skimmer.....I had a ER RS80 on the 50 which I guess I just sold to a RCer :) Now I have an ASM G2 which I picked up as stated above for $125.

Sump is a full custom 30g Tall. There is 20 lbs of LS under the skimmer and the pump is in the next compartment. I did this because I wanted to double skim best I could...working well so far. I have some rubble down there too right now. Gonna go pick up a bunch of Aquacultured Ogo from oceanproaquatics.com which is actually local to me and grow it down there.

oh and I'm planning on maybe an additional 30-60lbs of rock. Thing is, my beautiful wife LOVES the "sparsely placed rock which looks professional" and how can you argue with a cutie like this!!

I've never seen a skimmer sitting on LS on purpose, but it looks like it will work. I'd surmise that the area that skimmer is sitting upon won't be live for long, but the rest of the surface area should be okay.

You got a beautiful tank and stand for an excellent price. Score!

I like the mixed substrate look. And the LR is nice and clean, without nuisance algae.

What will the new light fixture cost?

And why was your chiller listing to the right?

The nova extreme pro cost me 343 plus shipping from drsfostersmith. Grim has done some extensive research on it with great results so I decided to buy one.

As for the chiller...with the 50 there was zero room anywhere to put anything. I hated it. I tried standing the ballast up on rubber mounts and putting the chiller in front of it making it flush to the tank but the ballast was getting way too hot from the exhaust. I ended up moving the ballast box out and keeping the chiller flush.

As far as algae goes I have to give the credit to the 4 large turbos. The cerith and nerite suck lol. On top of the fact that I lost no less than 15 nerite due to them climbing out at impossible angles and me finding them late somewhere stuck outside. Once I found one by my windowsill! lol. Anyhow I'm glad you like it marc

Oh and the 2 large scarlet reef hermits do a fantastic job on taller algae it's amazing to watch them graze!

to be honest I can't remember where I took that pic from. It was was a fish I wanted to buy for my FO tank a long time ago but I can no longer remember where they were selling it and what species it belonged to.

I"ll be keeping the pics updated as things change. I must admit this will be my first real "follow the build of my tank!" thread as I have never had a tank I was really happy with before so bear with me on delays and such.

I love it when the deals rain down from the heavens! Nice setup:D.

Your setup is beautiful! I love the maple stand and canopy. One of the first things that caught my eye was the mixed substrate. I like seeing things that are unique to a tank. Most tanks, including my own, are very similar so it's nice to see a particular characteristic that separates it from the others.

as far as the aquascaping goes we didn't even know what was going on. The tank was so cloudy that we just placed the rocks by feel and a vveery dim view from above. When the dust cleared we were in shock. I have never been able to make the rock work seem so natural before. My wifes favorite part (as well as my fish's) is all the crevices and caves. There are dozens and dozens of small openings all over the place. So from here on out I'm going to make one-two rock visits to the lfs at a time. To make sure I never buy more than what I need to maintain the "perfect look".

Chevegan - congratulations on such an awesome tank for such an awesome price. I'm the 'bargain finder' in my family so I really know how great it is to find a good deal like that!! Kinda makes me want to go to petco, lol !!! ;)

Beautiful clean tank! Love the stand and the aquascaping is very nice. The one time I did my aquascaping 'blind' like you did it cam out pretty good too - maybe that's the key - don't look!!

I am getting my 90 going now, with very very slow progress. What a great time for all these fun 90 builds! I will be following along, and maybe even get around to starting a 90g build thread of my own! Their going to have to make a whole new 90 gallon build thread forum before long!! LOL

Do you know yet what fish you want to add?

as far as fish go I think I only wanna add 2 more....simultaneously at that. A powder brown and a yellow tang. I've got a radar detector which means tang police won't catch this :p

Ya I recommend everyone go check out all the local petco clearance items weekly. I like going to the rich area petcos here in SoCal since snobs don't shop the clearance bin! Once I snagged 5 azoo sweeping power heads at $3 a pop and sold them on ebay for 17ea lol. I love the overall dimensions of a 90. the 18" depth lets me place the rock with a solid 3-4" gab front and back so the fish can swim all the way around...plus it aids in zeroing dead zones which become anoxic.

thanks, they're insanely bright green. Some have a florescent green center others orange and green. I've just never big a gigantic collector of zoo's and shrooms, though they do add a bit of color to the tank when there are as many on 1 rock as that one!

one more tidbit of info about my reef keeping habits. I don't add things I can't and or don't test for. I've seen many many examples of such tanks over the years that have had great success and even went on to being TOTM here on RC. I used to use 2 part but seeing as the water volume has gone up considerably I'm probably going to have to invest in a calc reactor in the future. I won't need one for a bit though since I lost all my sps and most of my sps when my last tank crashed due to a few snails dying all at the same time in my return pipe. The semi oxygenated environment sped of their decay causing the crash. Of course I didn't find this out till I was taking apart my tank. There is now of coarse a guard over the overflow.

ok so I went a bought a few things today. First I bought a 4-5" corcea a good looking green hammer with 2 heads and, my favorite, a 4"-4.5" purple tang. I initially went there to purchase a powder brown with a small yellow tang. However they didn't have any small yellows in stock and zero powder browns :(. Anyway for $55 he was a bargain. He looks spectacular. And as soon as he can sit still for more than a second I'll have a pic up. I also snagged a ric polyp from my wifes tank. I bought a rock with 2 of them on it 1.5yrs ago and now there is well over 50 in there.
