107 gallon cube anemone/mixed reef
 

Tank dimensions: 90x90x50 cms (35x35x20 inches)

Equipment:

Deltec MCE600 skimmer
2 x Maxspect Razor 180W fixture + 1 x 12 Watt spot light 6500K
1 Jebao RW8, 1 Jebao RW4, 1 Coralbox QP9
300 watt heater
hang on refugium
36 Watt Jebao UV
1 Dosing pump and a 25 litres container for rodi water with kalk and vinegar.

The goal of this tank was to hold a group of 13 clowns, but an outburst of brooklynella right at the begining made it go in another direction.

Here's the setup process:



3 clowns survived and they are still in the tank.

There are over 30 sunburst bubbletip anemones in the tank, a huge orangedrop bubbletip that never splits (it must be close to 45cms diameter) and a heteractis magnifica (recent addition).

I don't like tanks where fish swim back and forth from one side of the tank to the other, it makes me look at the tank as a cage, so I selected the fish with this very much in mind:

- 3 clownfish
- 3 threadfin cardinals
- 2 yellow assessors
- 1 tomini tang
- 1 matted filefish
- 1 diamond goby
- 2 flame angels



The most common comment when someone sees the tank is "There's no fish in the aquarium, just plants?"

They are all hiding most of the time. I am trying to figure out a way to change that. The anemones are probably creating an hostile environment, maybe?

The maintenance schedule is very simple.

I fill the 25 liters rodi container with water, kalk and vineger and the dosing pump pushes 3 liters per night.

1 do 10% water changes every 10 days.

And that's it, I guess.

I am forever trying to find a way to get more open space, because the anemones keep splitting.

Getting a tang was one of the most difficult decisions precisely because of that. But I checked lots of videos and the Tomini tang seemed to behave more like pygmy angel and not so much like your typical all over the place tang.

In my tank I see him as much as the yellow assessors :)

I rewatched your videos and can't seem to find where you hide all your filtration equipment? No overflow?

No, I don't have a sump. I have hang on back skimmer and refugium, but the refugium is not doing much, so I am thinking about taking it down.

I am going back in time and in this video I cover the entrance of the clown group in the tank. Some of this videos are not nice to watch, but there are some unique shots. Watch at around 4:00.

That video of all the clowns coming out with the sheep in the background through the window was just amazing! As sad as the next video was, I loved seeing a beautiful tank with the sheep in the background.

I remember filming the sheep through the tank, but I can't watch it. There were also 3 white horses roaming around but they went away and I never managed to film them.

I am putting the videos here, because they tell the story, but I can't watch them, it's too sad. I will never attempt to keep a large group of clowns again.

The piano is out of tune now, I must tune it in a few weeks, when the humidity finally comes down. It's a challenge keeping a tank and a piano innthe same room.

How long have you had the adult clownfish before introducing the new batch? I'm wanting to do a harem when I rebuild my tank. I've had a pair about 3-4years now.

The female was probably 11 years old.

I can tell you that is something I won't ever do again and not just because of the horrible experience.

It stressed out all the fish and that contributed to weaken their immune system.

Furthermore, the large majority of clown harems don't work out long term. If you check videos on youtube with clown harems, although you have distribution of aggression, they are fighting rings.

They don't drop sand on top of corals unless the coral is right next to their burrow.

They do an amazing job in keepting the sandbed clean and mine eats everything. Some of them are completely dependent on what they find in the sand and therefore are difficult to kkep.

I wish I knew how to pair them.

Really want a RBTA...but the fear of them taking over freaks me out...since I about 30 coral pieces in my tank so far. Awesome looking tank though!

The best way to keep them in a mixed reef is to give them their own island, with plenty of holes to hide their foot and keep the tank stable.

If you catch one on the go, move it back to the island or sell it if you already have enough of them.

I had the clowns in bubbletips for a long time, but they are much happier in their natural host.

It happens from time to time, but it never caused any serious issues.

There has been some cases where they went into the pumps and that's the reason I use carbon.

When I find them roaming, I either put them in the refugium or back in their island.

The anemones already seemed to want to jump out of the tank and conquer the world so a rescape was in order.
