Hybrid Onyx perc with Black Ocellaris

Recently my odd couple - Onyx percula and black ocellaris decided to spawn. I was able to raise a couple of batches of these. Here is a short article describing my experience with these.

The first surviving batch is now about 5 months old, and starting to develop some black coloration.

Very cool & great photos.

Looking forward to see how that 2nd batch progresses.

Great read, thanks!

That was wonderful, thanks for sharing your experience. I have an ocellaris pair that has just spawned, I got mine for Christmas. I also have an odd couple, a perc onyx w/black and white ocellaris, hmm. I have decided however to seperate them. I am planning to get another onyx, keeping the breed pure. I am planning to raise a batch of ocellaris soon.

Here are some latest pics of 2 that I moved out of growout into my 55G tank. They seem to have the ocellaris face with the percula eyes. They also have the ocellaris trait of the third stripe developing rather quickly unlike the onyx percs where it takes a long time to develop.

Excellent read. Thanks for sharing.
They're beautiful juveniles!

Congrats on rearing the fish this far. Nice article with some great pics as well! I noticed in the article you said that a picture of your larval catcher would be posted. Would you mind sharing a few pictures of it? I've been using the old "dunk the cup in the water" method to catch my baby clowns but I can't ever get the whole clutch. I built a catcher at one point, but wasn't happy with the results.

Thanks

These guys have been developing nicely for me. They are now at around 7 months old.

Around mid Jan I sold a few to people in the Manhattan area and it has been rather interesting to see how they are developing in other tanks. They started thread with pictures, and here is a link to it, where you can see the development.

That is beautiful. I saw your thread on MOFIB, and it is so interesting to see how these have developed.

traveller7 04/05/2009 04:34 PM

Let's not have sales and trade questions spill over into the discussion forums and ruin an informational post.

Thanks folks.

Sanjay,
Great looking fish! How many dorsal spine does it have? is it consistent with all the clowns?

Diver Dan SD 04/10/2009 06:57 PM

AWESOME!!!
I have a onyx and B+W occi pair as well!
Hoping someday they spawn!

rkelman 04/11/2009 04:29 AM

Wow Sanjay. That's a pretty awesome fish. You should try and get a pair of those and see if you can get them to spawn. It might be the next big thing :) Very nice fish. Are any of them full perfect bars? All the pics I see are misbars.

OrionN 04/11/2009 07:54 AM

Very nice. Is he the darkest of all of your babies? I an really see the Ocellaris shape in this clown.

The first batch had a lot of perfect bars. The 2nd batch I started playing with temperature to see if that had an effect on mis bars and it seems to. I got more mis bars at higher temps. I kind of like the mis bars - adds more variety to the fish.

I have a couple of these F1 that I am saving to see what comes from the F2 generation.

Also, now that the male is dead, I will pair the female with one of its off spring.

He is the darkest of the ones I kept from the first batch. There seem to be others that are just as dark or even more black among the ones that others got from me.

Plus at this point, I do not know how dark/black they will get over time. My guess is that in the worst case you will end up with an awesome looking Onyx, or a completely black occellaris looking fish.

I personally hope that they retain the orange in parts of the body and fins. That is how I like them.

Beautiful fish. You should come up with a name for them. Hybrid Onyx/Black ocellaris doesn't do the fish justice. Very unique and awesome fish.
