Minh 320 Reboot

I started my 320 DT system back in 2013. Build thread was here:
http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...ghlight=orionn

Anyway my tank crashed because a concern citizen came over to my house and turn my generator off after Hurricane Harvey. The house next door, empty because the elderly couple there just move to retirement home earlier that month, got a branch fell on their gas meter and cause a leak. Best I can determine, whoever turn my generator off though that my gas was leaking.

Fortunately I got home about 24 hrs after the gas was shut off. I lost all of my fish, my large T. gigas and all my SPS. Got a few LPS to live and all of my anemones survived the ordeal. They are at my friend's tank here in Corpus Christi.

Fast forward, to this last weekend, I get to spend the weekend clean and re-plumped the tank. I got everything out of my fish room. I set it up to breed clowns but I don't think I will again. Leave more room for my reef.

I removed all the rock and dead corals and put these rock in the corpus Christi Bay several weeks ago. When the time come, I will fish them out and put them into the tank.

This is where I will document the progress of this tank.

Fill with fresh water after re-plumped. Now need a scrub and start with rock and salt water. There is a slight leak in the return line. Will get it fix tomorrow.

BTW, I installed a camera looking right at my generator. I will know if the generator is running or not at all time when I am not home. Hope this will help with this particular problem. I really anticipated everything but not the contingent that somebody turn my generator off. I was thinking of putting a lock on the generator gas valve, but decided not to do this. I am sure there are time we want to turn off the gas in a hurry.

Ah, that's a bummer - essentially unobtainium now.

Very sorry for your loss! Glad to see you rebuilding:)

FarmerTy 02/09/2018 09:09 PM

Hooray! Glad you're back Minh! I sent a large piece of your purple bonsai back with Mike to give to you when your tank is ready. Also, when it is ready for SPS, give me a shout and I'll help restock you the next time to come to Austin for business.

Bajie 02/13/2018 09:37 AM

Oh my sweet lord ... i would still be mourning my losses

Will be following progress. So glad you had friends to look after the survivors.

Mknuwet 02/17/2018 08:44 AM

Sorry to hear. Any plans to do things differently this time?

Mike Ordner 02/17/2018 07:37 PM

I am still open to getting you topped off with with salt water if you want me to get some from Packery. Glad you are getting the big tank running again.

I redo the whole thing. Only thing is I will have security camera on my generator (and the rest of the house) and have warning on my generator that will report the status of the generator directly to my phone.
I was going to put a lock on my gas line but after thinking about it, I am sure there maybe times in the future when I may want to shut off the gas quickly. I would not want to have to find a key so I can shut off the gas.
Si I have to settle with knowing the status of my generator, and video of anybody walk back to that area. I will also put a gate so that one just cannot accidently get to the generator. I have fences, but no gate to the back yard.

I will try to get time to pull the rock out of the bay and get them into my tank, and get the water, either next week or the week after. I would really love to use you water tank to haul water.
Nothing firm yet, but I will let you know. Will plan it. Thanks, I will really need you there.

I got two more MP60 (total of 4 for the tank) and will not use my other PH. I also got a K2 Avast Kalk Stirer, and will fire up my Ca reactor (modified EO reactor) Won't start it up right away, but will after I get some frags and clams in.

can't wait to see the rebuild.

I suggest you put a sign near the shut off that reads something like:

"STOP this gas is powering a generator running LIFE SUPPORT equipment for animals even if no one is home. If you suspect a gas leak please call Minh at XXX-XXX-XXXX prior to taking any action."

I would put a sign in my front yard that told whoever turned off my gas that they killed animals and cost me $X,XXX as well because I'm a bad neighbor. My wife would remove it and yell at me as soon as she saw it.

Sure looks like you're taking advantage of the opportunity to rebuild and change anything you want, which is great! Can you share with us how you went about leasing/obtaining permission to put your rock in the bay? Very cool.

Thanks.
A friend of mine who live on the man make canal, a very large part of the main canal that empty right into the bay. I put it right next to his boat dock.

I run the system with just fresh water for several weeks, to kill everything prior to put into the canal. I did not mean to run it for several weeks but due to time constrain this was what happened.

This was how I seeded my rock prior to set up my tank last two times. Back in the 1990's I live on the bay so I just put it in there next to my dock. I got tired of living on the corrosive salt water and got tired of paying for the tax so I sold the house and moved inland. If anybody have the opportunity to do this, I highly recommended it. My rocks was out of the water for total of about 1/2 hr. It did not even cycle.

Very cool Minh, that is an awesome opportunity.

RIGUY314 03/03/2018 05:12 PM

glad to hear your setting it back up. can't wait for it. tagging along.

biecacka 03/05/2018 10:10 AM

That I should a pretty neat concept to drop your rocks near your old dock and cycle them that way. Like the rest of us, I'm glad you're back and I'll be following along.

Well, I got water in my tank, and took all the rock from the bay and put into my tank. I am terrible at aqua-scape and not at all happy with the arrangement. I am thinking of draining the water and redo it semi dry, climb into the tank and all. Now i need to gather water holders to hold 300 gals of water.
This is going to be a all weekend project.

Here are some of the picture of the tank, an a few selected hitch-hikers. The rock is really great with lots of live, but also a lot of aptasia (too many to count) and some gobies and all kinds of fauna and flora, even fishes. The are kinda nice, all about 1 inch or smaller. I counted about 10+ of them.

Terrible aquascape

Before aquascape, which is about the same as after. That is really bad

Now for the nice things, and not so nice
Gobies

Hopefully a batch of a dozen or so peppermint shrimp can clear up the aiptasia for you.

I spend all day redo my aquarium. I bought a bunch of plastic containers, 37 gal, and pump all the water out. Clean the tank, caught almost all the hitchhiker blennies and return them to the CC Bay.
With my wife help I try to arrange the rock on my floor and then get them back to the tank. Got about twice as much rock as I needed so a huge amount ended up in the sump and fill it up. Aching all over from working in then tank with bend-over back. The rocks are not as precarious as suggested in some of the pictures. I actually drilled the rock and stake them with rods. Difficult thing to do since rock are fragile and some of the break apart when I hammer drilled them or as I put the stake in.
This is the result. I have to say that I like it much better. Now I needed to get a bunch of turbo and get them in there and will get some sand from the Gulf of Mexico and put in there.

I put two of my MP60 in the tank. I decided to send two of my older MP60 in for service and upgrade to QD-MP60. They will be send in next week. Hope that I will get them back soon.
