Why are you afraid of CL?
When I build my next plywood tank(hopefully 8x4x4’ or 10x4x4’) I will do two CLs and 1 maybe 2 gyres hidden on the front sides.
I won’t drill the bottom of the tank though. All CL drains/returns will be maximum of 2’ deep. That way if there is an issue I’ll never need to drain the tank completely to fix a bulkhead.

I’m so over seeing big, bulky powerheads in the tank. CL is definitely not an outdated form of Wwater movement given all the efficient pumps now a days.
