I would not use mdf If you can find it .. HDF Would be a better choice if you MUST use this kind of material, Thou neither is suitable for the project for the fact they do not hold mechanical fasteners well as they are layered fibers.
HDF is treated with a fire rating similar to Drywall and can be water resistant depending on specs , We have used it a lot for high abuse areas such as schools Public building and hospital corridors and so on
Check with a Local Drywall commercial interior Supplier or contractor. they often will keep some in stock... ask for High impact Board..
but i ADVISE Against it...
