I'm not sure what has happened, but since you're not dosing any calcium or alkalinity supplements, I think we can rule out a precipitation event. That leaves a spawning event or a bacterial bloom as the more likely culprits.

The diatom filter removes very fine particles, including bacteria, from the water column. It can make the water a lot clearer, but can become blocked fairly quickly, and they're a bit of a pain in the neck to use.

The UV filter kills very small organisms in the water, so it's useful for bacterial or phytoplankton blooms. They are easier to set up than a diatom filter.

I suspect either will work well enough in this situation, so the choice is up to you.
