Very debated subject. In my opinion, no, theyre not really the same. I did not have the WP-40 so I cant say how it is. But I did have a couple wp-25s and while the flow, and control-ability of it was good, it was in no way the same as the MP. I had two wp-25s and now have 2 MP-40s. The WPs are a great buy and good pumps (also open to debate, just my experience).
The flow of the MP is much more broad, the wp's are more direct. All depends on what type of flow youre looking for and how much money you are willing to spend to get it.
The vortechs are louder, but I dont find them to be the grinders a lot of people make them out to be. I dont plan on switching back.

All in all, it depends on the tank. Many people have switched from the vortechs to tunze or tunze-style pumps and are very happy they did. I, however, do not plan on switching anytime soon.
