I've always painted the back black but my latest tank is painted white. I think it gives the tank more depth and the colors pop more. I would think white would also reflect more light back into the tank. I think I'll stick with painting the back white going forward. I'm trying my best to keep the back clean and free of algae. If I do, it'll be a first so unless you're going to scrap the back glass and keep it clean, it's pretty much going to be red, purple or green or all three.
