Yup, that is about what I do. If you pull the whole assembly out to work on the pump, you might as well open up the OM4 as well.

Your challenges with sand would probably have more to do with where your input strainers are...the habits of your tank dwellers (sand sifters etc.)...and the type of sand you choose.

Here's a photo of my OM4 installs. I suppose the real cost associated with this is the addition of all the necessary valves so that you can remove the thing for service!
