Eating food off the surface is a very unnatural behavior for saltwater reef fish, especially a grazer. It’s something they have to learn. In my opinion there is a danger of ingesting air so I avoid feeding off the surface by feeding sinking pellets and dropping them from high enough to break through surface tension when they fall.
