Choati Wrasse - Input needed

A LFS has a couple of these wrasse and I dont see much info on them

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have never seen fish bury its self in sand like these things. Very cool and odd.

They are an Australian Leopard wrasse you want to treat them the same way you treat other Leopards. I recently got one and I have to start him on live brine now he is eating Mysis and frozen brine. it also helps if you have lots of live rock and a healthy pod population. I have found you dont want to have too much competition for food with them. They are a little more shy. I have several other Leopard's and he fits in just fine. A great fish in my opinion! Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply - so lots of pods. Will they clean you out of pods? Meaning do they eat them faster than they produce?

Also, can you tell me what a good price is. They want a couple bills for one. It is a big gamble but I have not seen them before.

Thanks Again

They go for ~$150 online. I'd say if they keep them alive in the store for a couple weeks, buy it. Those things have a knack for kicking the bucket, something like a 50% to 80% death rate in the first month. Talk to iamwrasseman... I think he said he's had around five of them die on him now, and he keeps all the other leopards just fine. All the other leopards sleep in the sand too by the way. Read the primer at the top of the forum

They are difficult. If the one in the LFS is eating PE mysis, that is the first thing you must look for. However, they should always be treated for internal parasites with prazipro even if they exhibit no symptoms. Leopard wrasses cannot be sustained totally on prepared food as their digestive system is predicated around hunting whenever they are awake. I have several leopard wrasses including a Choati. I have had the Choati for three months but will not consider that I am out of the woods until it is a year old. Price wise, they go for $150-250 depending on whether they have a 14 day guarantee. I got mine from an LFS that imported them (six) directly.

Good info on the leopard thread

Not sure if I want to risk taking this guy home.

I had a very rare wrasse and it died in the first 24 hours. I grabed it because I have never been able to find one. Guess I know why.

If you are obsessed with wrasses, then it may be worth trying IF and ONLY IF it is eating PE mysis.

That discussion belongs in vendor experiences, but NO, I would not buy from them.
