I personally don't use chillers, just extra BLUE shade cloth/tarps & fans for evaporative cooling. Not quite shure what the rest are using/doing...

Im also on the greenhouse band wagon although not making much money yet, I'm slowly getting over that hurdle. I have pics just dont know how to post them will post when someone can help me!

i know im looking into building my green house here pretty soon but living out here in cali it gets pretty warm and wondering how to keep it cool, since we see temps where im at of 105+ for weeks on end in the midle of summer

I'm sure its doable, in Oregon we only get a few days a year that hot but with the right cooling system I can keep my temps from getting too high on those days. basically the hotter it gets the more evaporative cooling you need, as in more exhaust fans and probably fans over the tanks too. was wondering Rob why one side of the wall is covered for the most part while the other is mostly clear?

is it because of the way the sun raises etc?

The greenhouse is tempered glass flush glazed onto steel. Only the little triangular windows on the gable end are acrylic.

The covered shed section is for pumps, QT tanks, skimmers etc. It also houses my 1000L sump:

It's on the West side to cut down on late afternoon heat (the time when I want it least).

Not putting down anyones husbandry

I'm just curious if anyone has ever tried like a miniature green house out side a large green house to use as a algae turf scrubber just asking because if I had a green house I would give it a try since light is free and coral food is left in while taken out inorganics?

@Clintos, I misunderstood your question. The solid wall at the back of the greenhouse is South facing (the equivalent of your North facing). This provides better insulation and reflects light down into the tubs. The shed bit is on the West side.

@xroads All tubs are hooked together at the moment, but can be separated reasonably easily.

I plan to get a greenhouse up and running this year(09-10) and am looking at somthing with a footprint of 30'x36' giving me about 1000sqft of space. I plan to have 2 seperat systems, system 1 sps/lps 1000+ gallons total for the sps, lp system, system 2zoa,paly and various "high end" shrooms yumas ect totaling about 400 gallons. and MAYBE a 3rd system a sw "pond" and a mangrove lagoon which would have only mangroves setup like a planter and with resivoir and pumps I could simulate a tidal pattern.(just because it would be cool) with a bunch of large tangs angels and maybe a bamboo shark in the pond or maby combining the pond and mangrove lagoon. water would be recycled as much as possible, sps water change water would go to the softie system then softie system water would go the the "pond" then to the mangrove lagoon(unless the pond and lagoon are combined)

I have a few questions concerning keeping things cool. where I live its not uncommon to have 110-115 degree days for weeks on end. I was thinking of burying a large tall and skinny underground water storage tank and running the water from the top to the bottom then to "buried" refugium/equipment sump. would this along with fans keep water cool?

and on a side note has anybody succesfuly raised clams in captivity(other than systems directly plumbed i directly to the ocean?) that is my #1 goal.

Hey bro how much humidity are ya dealing wt? As far as evaporative cooling is concerned, the humidity is more of an issue than the temp. Hard to evaporate water in higher humidity vs lower. IMO.

in the dead of summer we average 10%-20% humididty, I've considered evap cooling, it seem like a combo of "geo thermal" and evap cooling are my best bet, I could add a chiller if needed(2-3hp) I've also decided to up the size of the gh for more stability 25'-30'x60'-90'

Nobody grows SPS indoors like Tuna though. He's def got a green thumb for them. I do better than him with the zoanthids though. DO NOT PLUMB SYSTEMS TOGETHER!!! Bad idea very bad.

Here are the pros and cons for plumbing the systems together, as I see it:

Cons:
1. Allelopathy and direct physical competition (stinging, overshadowing)
2. Single water conditions for all (some coral/anemones prefer more nitrate than others)
3. Pest transferral between tanks
4. Single points of failure for the whole system

Pros:
1. Centralised filtration
2. Centralised monitoring
3. Centralised dosing
4. Better thermal inertia/temperature change resistance

For me, the pros outweigh the cons. Jimi, can you tell me why they don't for you?

I'm not Jimi,
But I'll tell ya why I don't plumb em together, first to address the "Pros"
1 There is very little filtration in my systems, over 1/2 dont even get skimmed on a regular basis...

2 I test every system every other day for Alk, Ca+, pH, & salinity - takes about 5 minutes...

3 I dose every system every day, takes LESS than 5 minutes...

4 According to the engineers at a large aquaculture wholesale supply store, hooking up multiple systems DOES NOT increase temp change resistance, tanks over 28" deep is the best way to increase temp stability, doesn't matter how many ya hook together...

The cons far outweigh the pros IMO,
