The "bulge"

Let's talk about this. I am concerned. I have a chaetodontoplus meredithi that may or may not have this bulge. I am referring to one that people have seen on their chaetodontoplus species angelfish that did not make it What is it? What should we treat with?

If it is eating I would just keep an eye on it.
Recently, one of my angel bulged up and stopped eating for 2 days so I went with prazi for 24 hrs only because other fish were affected by the treatment and the sicked angel started to nibble again anyway.

Peter,

We have one of those aquacultured septentrionalis from 2003 or so and it has been fine (albiet a bit stunted) since then. Over the past 4 months, it has gradually developed edema - first noticed as a swollen belly, but now the eyes are protruding and the whole fish looks "thick". I'm suspecting kidney failure, but can't think of any supportative therapy for it - is that what you are seeing?

Jay

Jay, I was referring to this post:

If I stare hard enought, and squint, I could possibly maybe see a VERY slight bulge on my meredithi in the same center of the body location (not the belly itself). Granted, he is also new, so maybe just not fat/filled in yet. But still, I'm being a bit paranoid I guess.

I had an Emperor Angel die from a "bulge". It was a swim bladder infection though. Easy to spot because the fish loses its balance and starts having issues swimming upright.

The bulge on the center of the body is more apparent on larger fish especially with a sunken stomach. The 7" BL I'd since May of this year came in with it but was not as bad as the last couple of weeks when it slowly stopped eating. I was told at the time of purchase that it was on the skinny side but was eating but was a lot more skinny than I thought. This is the second one this size that had the bulge and the first one didn't pass three months. I guess this is the case that is labeled as 'the swimming dead'.

I never had a skinny Meredithi though but both of mine were purchased at 3". I'd a very skinny Crosshatch that came in around 7" and had a nasty cut on the chin that was almost like a see-through hole but fully recovered after Maracyn treatment.

Peter--If your Meredithi is relatively small and eating aggressively then I wouldn't worry too much and just keep a close eye. My 7" BL ate but was never aggressive and that should have been the telling sign.

Thank you for the info. He does eat well, and acts "normal", so I will just wait and see...
