Interesting idea. I'm definitely going to steal it! It prevents the airstone from floating, and not relying on the suction cups. Which suck most of the time.

You throw them away? I keep the airline and bubble wand(I use these in place of a traditional airstone). I have 3 sets and just let them dry out, and reuse.

I use these in my TTm and QT tanks.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002AQ0SE...a-323765312045

In place of a more traditonal airstone.
https://www.amazon.com/AQUANEAT-Aqua...ords=air+stone

Which type do you use?

As a side note.....

I was just scrolling up and noticed the pictures of the green slimer I got 2 weeks ago. It has grown quite a bit already. Added another branch, the side that was brown is all green, and has shot up probably a 1/4 inch. You don't really notice growth when looking at them day to day.

The ONLY thing I reuse in my QT tanks is heater and a 3" PVC T piece. I can completly wipe them down and clean to ensure nothing transfers. An air wand or stone even when feeling dry can still have water inside and you cannot guarentee that your vinegar or bleach reach every aspect of it.

I have a section of tubing from the airpump that goes to a needle valve. From there to the tank all of that tubing is disposed between every tank swap. I either dispose of the stone (they are cheap and I buy these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) or I will throw them in a jar if I think of it to reuse months from now. I typically pitch though since so cheap and lowers risk of me grabbing wrong one OR having to store even more crap!!!

The issue with suction cups is after so many cleanings with vinegar or bleach plus on/off the tank they warp. For all of maybe 30 cents I got 2 fittings that I use now instead and can easily be cleaned.

I have always used the bubble wands, no idea why, just have. Maybe in my head because they are larger they oxygenate the water better? I don't know. The ones I get you can completely take apart and let them dry out. They are so thin they dry out pretty quick with no ends on them. yes as we all know suction cups suck after a while, so placing the bubble wand in a piece of 3/4 pipe would hold it to the bottom. great idea!

I totally understand where your coming from with throwing everything away, and I probably should be doing it that way, but I have yet to have a problem(knock on wood lol).

What you say in Reef's thread? ounce of prevention is better then a pound of cure???

Adding what $8 to the cost of that fish or whatever you are putting through QT to guard agsint any potential of transfer is a small cost....

The salt you use is the largest cost of a QT. Hell I dont even run a light. Simply a tank, water (from DT), heater, airstone, and a PVC pipe...

I don't use a light either, and I have never TTM'ed or QT larger fish so I just use 5 gallon buckets for TTM. Cover with a spare towel, heater, bubble wand, and a couple pieces if pvc to hide in.

Lol after I just read that in reef's thread, I ordered more airline and stones. Your right though, for the extra cost of not even 10$ it's totally worth it to be sure.

5 gal is ok but I prefer to be able to better observe fish while in QT and watch them eat. Since you are going to be restocking with fish and whatnot here as opposed to a one off now and then I suggest you spend the $20 for 2 10 gal tanks so you can watch the fish a bit as they go through QT.

My BTA split into 2!

I know they do this, but have never witnessed it. I'm assuming some time yesterday or last night. I fed all my corals friday morning around 4am. Went to work till 8pm, and went straight to bed. Went back to work around 4am this morning, and when I got home around 2 I started cleaning the glass and noticed 2 BTA's.

Shhh.... It's been a year since I bought it. So maybe it will only split once a year if I'm lucky? Knowing my luck, by this time next year I probably won't have anything in the tank except BTA'S!

Yeah I know they can become a huge PITA once they start splitting, but I still think it's pretty cool.

The green slimer I got about a month ago now has actually grown a bit, and the side that was polypless and brown, has nice polyps and is nice and super green.

Third yellow eye kole went into QT last night(hopefully this one makes it). Same QT as all the other fish died in. Only thing I did was remove some of the LR, WC, and added an airstone.

I honestly think now that I think back, that it was low oxygen that killed the fish. The QT was loaded with pods(for the wrasse) since I seeded it and fed it phyto. I could see the pods crawling. Now I see nothing.

One of the last couple days the clowns were swimming in the PH current, this makes me also believe it was low oxygen. We shall see as I still have to wait till May 1 for the fallow period to end.

4 days and I have a dead yellow eye kole. It was swimming and eating up until I found it dead this morning. No unusual coloring or markings, gills not flared out, mouth closed, no physical signs of stress. I just have no idea. It did have some small red patches I was thinking it could have been uronema, but as I've never actually seen it, it could have been the fish loosing it's coloring as it died, so I'm not 100% positive it wasn't. Although it did not look like the red splotches I have seen posted on here as definitive uronema.

I'm using a regular 40G that I cycled with the old pukani I had. I bleached the rock for a couple days, then rinsed in RO/DI with prime to neutralize the bleach. Then went through a regular cycle process. I have 2 small korralia nano powerheads going, with a bubble wand, and 2 preset walmart heaters(think their tetra set for 78). Should be a decent QT, but everything dies.

I tore it down last night as the tank developed a small crack at the bottom anyways(I was keeping my fingers crossed it held for another month when my fallow period ends). No extra detritus laying around, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates are all 0's.

No idea whats going on, but I'm going to give up on fish until my DT is over the fallow period. You would think my QT setup should be no different then a FOWLR tank, but for some reason all the fish just die.

Curious if there is not trace bleach still in the rock. Given how porous it is if it was not COMPLETLY dry you might still have bleach in the system.

I dont cycle my QT tanks and find it pointless to do so for a temp tank. I merely change out the water every couple days and add in prime to the water I add. Problem solved.

It is still very weird all your issues though Homer

I agree with the issues!

The DT is finally going good. Acans have grown, my original candycane that was fragged to 1 head is soon to be 5, both plating monti's are growing good, and even the green slimer seems to be doing good.

I'm done with fish until at least may 1.

Only reason I cycled the QT was the length of time they were going to be in there. Basically a temp FOWLR tank. Either way I tore down the tank as I have no fish, and I can get to doing the floor sooner. The fish room will be so much easier and cleaner with tile floor instead of carpeting.

Everybody loves pics! And seeing as I'm now not ashamed to show off the tank.....

Close up of the green slimer. It's typically all nice and fuzzy with it's polyps out, but I just cleaned the gass for the pics and ****ed it off a bit.

Same SPS, but in this shot if you compare back a few posts, you can rally see how much it has grown in such a short time.

Right side of the tank with my original goniopora, pink monti, and a rock flower.

Warpaint scoly still kicking and growing. I can't believe this guy has made it and flourish's.

Red monti thats gotten huge already! And a small chunk of goni that broke off the mother colony.

This was fragged into a single head a few months back to save it. It's now soon to be 5 heads.

And of course the FTS.

EDIT:
Tank looks so bare with no fish.

Very nice pics! I have a low profile rock scape too. Leaves lots of swimming room. I know you are real anxious to get some fish in there for sure. Your corals look great!

I'd lower that slimer to acclimate it to lower lighting given the short nature of your aquascape.

Thank you! Yes I'm very anxious to get some fish in there. Tank looks very stagnant with no movement.

I do plan on lowering that, but seeing as it was my first SPS and I know they like heavy flow and strong light, so I placed it there in hopes it would make it. It obviously is doing well so I'll start to slowly bring it down to my rockwork height.

Speaking of rockwork, I have a plan to use some of the old pukani. Just has to get nice outside so I can clean it up before I use it again. Sooner or later it has to stop snowing!

I'm planning on hacking it up so it's like 2 large archs coming from the back over the top of my current rockwork with a single spire to hold it all up. It looks good in my minds eye, but we'll have to see how it looks when I get to actually doing it. My thinking is higher up in the tank for more higher light demanding corals, while still leaving plenty of room over the top of my current rockwork for light and flow for the corals that are already placed there.

I'd classify the green slimer as more of a mid light SPS. I actually have mine in the back of my tank rockwork which is not under direct light and it grows without issue. In fact it grows too fast and into the more shaded areas. I am constantly giving away pieces of it and my green planet which has similar growth.

Mine also has no direct flow. I have the return line above it and a powerhead blowing across the tank whereas it is against the back wall.

Well see I don't know jack about SPS's. When I bought it they told me it was one of the easier SPS's, but it still required direct flow and high lighting.

I think most LFS dont know too much either and I will caution that every piece is different and will look different depending on tank and settings.

But yes the slimer is a very hardy piece and is easily put where wanted without too much issue.

That's algae/scum not building up on your rocks, so looks good to me.

the nice thing about the green slimer is that it's generally bulletproof. It's very tolerant to tank conditions, flow, etc., and should hold it's color as well. You can put it down low in the tank and it'll still probably hold its color. If it starts to turn brown, just bring it up little by little.

Most SPS really aren't that crazy hard to take care of. I actually have a more difficult time with LPS than I do with SPS, though an LPS is the only thing that survived my ammonia-filled tank crash.

See right now thats an issue with my low rock work. It's only about a foot difference between the sandbed and the top of the rockwork.

Browning I understand, need more light. It's the sudden RTN or STN of SPS that scares me. But seeing as this one is doing so well(tank is more or less stable), I'll have to see what Soul and/or his LFS's have to offer me when I go out there next week.

It's just hard around me to find any LFS that even has SPS for sale let alone anything easy, and the one reef club around these parts is pretty dead. So I'm stuck to what I find out in Buffalo(5 hour one way trip so that doesn't get taken very often), or I buy on the net.

If you can deal with a disaster of a house (tax season so very little time to clean) and a tank still infested with Aiptasia then I will be WFH on Friday so you can swing by and we could hit up my favorite LFS. Though I will warn you that he has some killer ultra acans in right now so you might have trouble walking away.
