just had to show

I teach marine science to 11th and 12th graders and this is my first year (though I taught biology for 8 years). We started from NOTHING and I am amazed my the generosity of strangers who are helping us out.

We were given 2 BEAUTIFUL tanks today. A 75 and 35 gallon reef. The 75 had metal halides and chiller. Both had tons of live rock and sand, coral and fish. Here is the pic of the 75 before we took it. Not a great pic but I was just taking it so I had an idea of things before we took it apart.

BUT GET THIS!! The tank seems very heathy...corals are all BEAUTIFUL! They also said that there were 2 fire/bristle worm guys in there that seemed big but they weren't sure. LOOK AT THIS THING!!

...and there were another 4 almost that size and another 10 half that size and then another 50 we got rid of. I'm sure there are more, but I'm so shocked that SOO many and such BIG ones can live there and not be seen!!!!!......and the corals even seem so healthy!!

Anyways, I just had to share. I thank Michael and Joan for the donation. The tanks are BEAUTIFUL and the students will love them (especially since 400 marine students didn't even have a live fish for most of this year). The worms just absolutely amaze me that they could be hidden there for years unknown. It gives me the **SPOOKS***

By the way, how fast do these things grow?

WOW! That's some worm. I agree there are likely hundreds more in there, maybe not so large. Most are beneficial to the tank. Nice to get such generous donations.

take it to biology class and have them disect that worm. That would be a great variation from the standard frog disect.

That thing scares me. If I saw something that size in my tank I'd flip out with concern. FYI, I'm obsessive about things and not a big fan of pest insects such as cockroaches. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I saw one of those.

Well can you tell me this? WHAT IS IT????? I know it's a bristle, but is it one of those fire ones that supposedly eat corals and burn you?? That's what I thought it was, but now from the comments, I'm not sure. If it's the fire guy then I assume they need to be gotten rid of when I see them. Other bristles I will leave.

It's funny, I can catch the snakes, lizards, roaches, rats and most anything else most would be scared of. My ONE fright are catepillars/centipedes. This guy GROSSES me out!!

it doesn't look like a fireworm, i'd say it's just your regular bristleworm. they are good for the tank but that thing is huge and will probably be more of a nuisance than anything. ( undermining you rock and stuff ) and that's not counting the ewwwwwwwwww factor. keep the small guys but i'd say ditch those monsters.

Holy cow! I would freak out if I found that in my tank, even the little ones creep me out. I too am disgusted by centipedes and such, bristle worms for me are the equivelant. But it was very nice of them to donate the tanks to the school.

I would probably curl up in a ball and cry if I found something like that in my tank. I couldn't imagine a 5 footer!

LOL! I agree with you all and so do Joan and Michael who gave us the tanks. The 2 tanks are beautiful with very very health corals....what makes you wonder...they've only had that tank for 2 years....what about you guys who've had tanks for more than that.....!!! :O now THAT"S scary!!!! They said "I'm sure we'll find things in the rocks we don't know about" and none of us had any idea about THOSE things.

More than likely....many of you reading this.... HAVE THEM TOOOOOOOO!!!!

CREEEEEEEPY! but apparently not that bad....too bad they don't look pretty and do the same thing they do now...we'd probably love them then!
