12G Aquapod w/70W halide SPS/LPS

Here are a couple pics of my 12 gallon Aquapod that sits next to my desk at work. It is mostly SPS/LPS & zoos but I have a couple softies that I am going to be getting rid of soon. The tank has been set up for about 3 months now. Most of the stuff came from my old 3 gallon pico which was up for about 2 years. I upgraded because I was running out of room.

Upgrades:
  • sapphire skimmer in the first chamber in the back.
  • koralia 1
  • maxijet 900 upgrade for the return pump
  • u shaped spray bar/rock stand powered by a maxijet 1200
  • 70w halide in the stock hood
  • 4 fans to keep the temp down - 2 cooling the lights and 2 in the front with 1 pulling air out and 1 pushing air in.
  • blocked off the 2 lower intakes for better surface skimming

Here is a full tank shot:

This is a montipora that I bought a while back that I had never seen before. It is an orangish-gold base with orange polyps that have electric blue tips. Anyone have an ID on this?

The current residents are:
  • 1 black ORA clown
  • 1 high fin goby
  • 1 sexy shrimp
  • asst. CUC

SPS:
  • sunset montipora
  • montipora pictured above
  • blue polyped monti danae
  • oregon tort
  • cali tort
  • red monti cap
  • green monti cap
  • green monti cap w/ purple rim
  • bali tri-color
  • peach colored acro
  • pink birdsnest
  • green/blue acro
  • superman montipora digitata
  • montipora undata that I saved from a red slime algae outbreak (not doing so hot right now)
  • purple tipped yellow acro
LPS
  • frogspawn
  • candy cane
  • 2 types of acan lords
zoos/palys
  • fire in the sky
  • lunar eclipse
  • tubs blue
  • green w/orange rim
  • pink w/green mouth
  • eagle eye
  • green button polyps
softies
  • green ricordia
  • GSP
  • xenia

It looks like I have red bugs on a couple of my frags. They are still growing well, but I think I will try to get my hands on some interceptor this weekend and treat them.

Also, I am going to add a SSB to the tank in the next couple weeks as well. My high fin goby is going to get a pistol shrimp buddy soon and I want them to be able to create burrows.

I added the sand bed. It is about 2" deep. My goby is much happier. With the bare bottom, he would just hide all day. Now that there is sand, he is out and active.

I also picked up a candy stripe pistol shrimp a couple days ago. This morning I came in to work and couldn't find the goby. After the lights came on, he stuck his head out of a cave and the pistol shrimp followed him out. I am surprised they found each other so quick. I figured it would take a while. Such a cool pairing.

Sweet pair, did you buy them that way or did they pair up after addition to the tank?

I have had the goby for about 6 months and just added the shrimp last week. It only took them about a day and a half to pair up. I came in on Friday and they had a little cave all set up.

Thanks. Things seem to be growing pretty good. My sunset has doubled in size since I brought the frag in from home. I also have a bunch of new coralite growth on my oregon tort. The other frags I glued to the rocks have grown over the glue and encrusted quite a bit onto the rock.

Well, I lost my black clown a few weeks back. I couldn't find any sign of him when I tore the tank down to add the sand bed. Yesterday I picked up a couple small clams. I happened to look down in the return pump chamber when I was placing the clams and saw my little black clown staring up at me.

I ended up draining the whole back section of the tank down to about 1" of water and then coaxing him out from underneath the middle chambers with some food. Once he was over eating, I lowered the net and scooped him up and got him back in the main display. He is much more social now and swims all over the tank. Before, he would just hang out at the top of the tank.

I feel that the tank looks cluttered, with no real sense of direction. You have great equipment list, and stocking is great, good variety, but I don't think your tank is very visually appealing. It looks slopply done, I would only suggest better use of space, through the addition of Live rock and aquascaping. It has the potential to be very nice, unless your are simply using it as a frag tank for your 120g...

Here is a picture of the skimmer. I forgot my camera today, so this is taken with my phone.

I had to lower the water level in the back of the tank quite a bit to get the skimmer to run. I also put the skimmer on a 1" pedestal to raise it up even more. The top of the cup sits right below the top of the overflow chamber.

This skimmer is great. I get a nice wet skimmate that fills the cup about every other day. The only problem I have with it is that every so often it will stop pulling air. I think I am going to get the pump mesh-modded this weekend in order to pull in some more air.

The tank has been moved to it's new location. I got up at 4am this morning to move the tank before work. It was all up and running by 7:30.

I ended up draining it about 3/4 of the way and removing most of the rock & coral. They were placed in a rubbermaid container with some of the water. I did about a 30% water change with the move. Everything is opened, polyps extending and generally happy, all things considered. The temp got down a little lower than I would have liked (75.5), but I have been slowly been bringing it back up. It is at 78.6 right now and should stabilize at 78.9-79.2.

Here is a pic of the tank in its new space.

The view is much better from here too.

We are on the 48th floor. I am in a corner, so I have a full 270 degree view of Seattle. I can see every direction except south.

Great Tank and nice view! It looks like I can see my office in your photo

I have been debating on whether to move my 12-Gallon AP to work. Nice job.
