Yes, Females turn into males over their life span. Once they start changing, its usually for good. They can and will hold in a subdominant state for some time though.

For starters,

A.) The male is larger
B.) The color on the male is more intense
C.) The diamond on the tail is more pronounced.

The colors on the male are fantastic. Do you still have'em in? So based on the pictures it appears that I have a subdominant male ya think?

Yeah, yours doesn't look like a super or terminal male yet. A few females may push him over the edge, so to speak

Females of any species have a tendency to do that

Yes, I still have the male, but he is blind in one eye. The female I lost due to an overly aggressive rosy scales wrasse. That was my first fish that I found as jerky on my netting

I think the one you have is a male. When they are paired up, their colors also become more intense. The whole "supermale" thing, IMO, is just another marketing tool and a way for a reefer to feel better than they next guy even though they have the same fish; I sometimes sit back and laugh at people who must have a supermale

"Supermales" are more intense and are larger. Fairies wrasses start out as females, sub males, males, and then on to dominant males. As they get older and more dominant, they get even more colorful. If you pair him up, you will see

I happen to be one of those that buy into the supermale thingy. It makes me feel good inside too

I think its even better when someone wants to buy a supermale by itself where if they had done any research before, they would know that the only way to keep those colors is to have a female around.

Still waiting for him to come in. I know a guy that smuggles them in. He puts them into balloons and swallows them before he gets on the plane. You don't want to know how he gets them out.

Tumor growth. I thought it was goner. It even hid in the corner for three days. Then out of no where, the tumor in its mouth was gone and I noticed the shot eye.

The rosy scales was the most aggressive fairy I have ever kept and I have had a few. I know plenty of reefers that have had similar experiences. They are an awesome looking fish though.
