My son's 29g

I talk about my son's tank often enough. I figured since I went to the trouble of cleaning it last night, I should post some pictures.

He's got my old 29g aquarium, which I turned around since the back was scratchless. A Remora Protein Skimmer, a Maxijet 1200, a heater and a couple of VHO bulbs run by an Icecap ballast take care of the equipment list.

Inhabitants are a mated pair of Gold Stripe Maroon Clownfish, a Golden Eel, a Snowflake Eel, an urchin, two whelks, a turbo snail, some mushrooms, a little Green Star Polyps, some button polyps and a Long Tentacle Anemone.

In the back corner you can see a patch of maroon clownfish eggs.

The green algae is unknown, but maybe referred to as Bottle Brush because it looks like it when studied up close.

The tank is fed once every night, and topped off pretty much daily. No sump or refugium on this set up.

My son is 18, and going to college this fall. He'll live at home. He's had a tank in his room for 2.5 years now. It was a 10g for a long time with those maroon clowns.

I started fish keeping at, say 8 or so, saltwater when I was about 14, and reef when I was about 17... Going from a 10 to 20, 30, 55, 75, and 125g... Now back to just the 75, as reef. I will be 26 in Oct.

Did a kick butt report on my reef tank for 10th grade bio, got 100% from a teacher that hardly ever gave them. , btw a 96% on my bio final ... Ahh, the good ol days!

Awesome tank! But c'mon, is that a freshwater background? :-P

That's a very interesting tank though, would be fun to watch, definitly. How are the eels doing with the inverts?

I think it is a reef background with some macro algae, but honestly I've never looked at it. As long as I don't see cords and equipment hanging thorugh the back panel, I'm happy.

The eels don't cause any trouble at all, but I don't put shrimp or anything like that in there. I have put fish I can't stand in there, and they mysteriously vanish.

Nice setup--I believe your 'bottlebrush macro' is bryopsis and i have it everywhere! I'd get rid of it if you can--it can get way out of control...

No, this is bryopsis, something I'm very familiar with.
http://www.melevsreef.com/id/bryopsis.html

This stuff is willowy, feathery, and just plain different.

By now you can probably distinguish it by feel alone

The Golden Eel looks as if he just heard the dinner bell. Anxiously waiting

Do you have any more pictures of the bottlebrush macro? I have something similiar but it's between the bropsis and the algae you picture. Does it have a peculiar, acrid scent when removed?

I've never smelled it, but I'll get some new pictures with the pumps off, as well as one with it on a white paper towel.

I had to do something about flow in my son's tank. I've been watching threads on modifying a Maxijet for some time now, and never pursued it because they always needed a bit more effort than I was willling to pursue. Until today. Rickjb told me how he'd changed his pump using what it came with, and I thought I'd give it a shot.

Here are the pictures.

Using a hacksaw, I cut off the jet off the impellar cover.

Holes were drilled in the coverplate to allow more water to flow in.

Here it is in the tank.

And what the tank looks like. The white is a sheet of eggcrate that keeps the eels away from the clownfish.

And a 30 second video www.melevsreef.com/video/mj_mod.wmv that is under 2 megs.

The tank looks different because I pulled it all apart a week ago to do a thorough cleaning and 80% water change. The anemone is still trying to get used to it.
