April 2008 nTOTM - InLimbo87's 33 Gallon Cube

Thanks to everyone who voted for my tank for this month's 'Nano Tank of the Month' Contest. There were a good bunch of entries this month, and I hope we can continue improving this contest.

Here's a little bit about my setup:

Oceanic 33 Gallon Cube (20.5"x21"x20.5")
Sunpod 150w HQI (14000k Phoenix bulb)
Two Koralia 1 Powerheads
1 MJ900 for surface agitation
AquaC Remora with Surface Skimmer attachment
~40 lbs of Live Rock
~20 lbs of Live Sand

This tank has actually only been setup for about a month and a half now, but was an upgrade from my nanocube 12 I had setup for over 6 months. Its constantly a work in progress, but I've tried to keep this setup as simple as possible.

Filtration is accomplished through the AquaC Remora and weekly 10% waterchanges. Livestock is a mix of softies/lps/ and a couple sps, along with my five fish.

One question. I also have an AquaC remora skimmer. Even though I don't have the surface skimmer attachment, do you mind posting a pic of your skimmate or at minimum describe your skimmate? Can you also describe how often you feed and what foods you use? Your skimmer must be working very well considering how nice your tank looks!!

My skimmer is only pulling tea colored skimmate for about a month now after raising and lowering the collection cup. Thanks for the help and keep up the good work!!

I've had mine running on my tank for about a month now as well. I feed pretty light (once a day) and get a dark 'tea colored' skimmate. Its a pretty wet skim, but my tank is still new so I'm not expecting much more just yet.

I get around this much every 24 hrs:

congrats man! i have a 10 gallon right now and i am really wanting to upgrad to a 30 gallon oceanic cube myself! seeing yours makes me want to more! lol

Thanks for the pic. Okay, mine looks somewhat similar. Good to know. If my tank can look as good as yours, than I'm happy!

I really love your tank -- nice job...
I am in the middle of setting up the same exact thing...red house links you to it if interested.
Can you tell about your H2O top-off (automatic?) and if/how you maintain calcium?
One more...what sort of stand do you have and can you show some pics of that and your light setup.

Looking into getting (2) Koralias for my nano. Do you find the (2)Koralia #1s adequate for the size of your tank?

For top-off, I use a JBJ auto top off unit coupled with a Tom's Aqualifter pump. I keep a 5 gallon bucket full of kalkwasser under the tank for top off which accomplishes both my freshwater topoff and calc/alk replacement.

I have the Oceanic stand... I'll snap a pic of it sometime but it's just the stock one with the one glass door.

JeffReef, I've found the two koralia 1's to be perfect for my tank

is it because of your camera? My pheonix is like a 10k compared to yours.... and i use the same fixture (150 watt sunpod....)

No, its not the camera. My phoenix is definitely bluer than the stock 14000k bulb, and some would actually compare the blue of the Phoenix's to a 20000k. Maybe you have a bad bulb?

hmm.... is there anywhere to check the bulb itself to make sure its a pheonix. I bought it as a phoenix off dfs (or aquacave, cant remember), but it just came in a white package. It was only the tiniest more blue than the stock bulb that came with the sunpod....

Is there a brand name or anything on it?

Congratulations, lovin' the tank InLimbo. I have a 30g Oceanic cube that will be my new tank. I've been debating whether or not to drill and sump it but after seeing this tank I don't think I'm going to go that route.
