GFCI: If you don't have one, get one!
It likely saved my fish, and probably my own life this past weekend! I removed my canopy (which had a T5HO retrofit installed in it) in order to get to the back of my tank so I could scrape it clean. I have my Ice Cap 660 ballast installed on the top of the canopy, and I had unplugged the harness and removed the ballast to save weight - that canopy was heavy enough as it was.
When I put the canopy back on the tank, the harness that plugs into the ballast fell into my tank, and everything shut off perfectly - even though I had unplugged the harness, I never unplugged the cord out of my powerstrip (dumb). That was live 110v that dipped into my 90g tank! So if you don't have your equipment plugged into a GFCI outlet, please install one. I installed mine back when I setup my tank, but always wondered if it actually worked. Well, now I know it works, and I'm still around to spread the word! |
