My 15g under-the-microwave nano build log

Equipment is ordered, and unlike my 120g that has been in progress for 18 months and is still dry, this one is actually going to have water in it soon!

Equipment is going to be:

Standard 15g tank
Current USA 24" Sundial Fixture (4x24w T5HO w/ lunar lights)
Tunze Nano Cleaner
Koralia Nano

I am picking up the tank this weekend, and the other gear should arrive next week. This tank is skimmerless and sumpless, so water changes will be key. I plan to keep a mix of LPS and hardier SPS, and a few small gobies or the like.

The challenge here is the vertical space I have to work with. 18" above the kitchen counter where the tank lives is my microwave shelf. Fun times ahead!

That fixture is nice, I have one over a 29 and I have been growing acros for a few months. However, I will recommend to upgrade the bulbs if you decide to grow anything more than softies.

Is your microwave oven located on the shelf you mentioned? And if so, are there going to be any long-term issues with the tank being located so close to a microwave oven?

I wondered about that, but I can't imagine there will be. They are well sealed for radiation and they are on different circuits.

You'll have some monster corals if that sucker leaks. LOL If your corals start walking around and beating up the fish then I'd check the seal on your microwave..

Seriuosly though, the K Nano might be a little slow for any SPS. I have one in my 10G and it is not much flow. My SPS are growing (under 130w PC) but not at a fast rate.. In a 15G, the Nano might be too little flow. I'd consider adding a K1 with the Nano and it'd be nice flow.

Should be cool though. Can't wait to see pics.

I should have actually included a Koralia 1 as well, I already have that on hand though.

Total tank turnover will be quite good:

K Nano - 260gph
K1 - 400gph
Tunze Nano Cleaner Pump - 200gph

So 860gph in a 15g is almost 60x.

I think that my limiting factor as to SPS is going to be nutrient control, as this is a sumpless, skimmerless system.

I'll be relying on weekly 15% water changes, lots of flow, good quality liverock, limited bioload and carbon/gfo in the Tunze nano cleaner to keep quality up.

I might have water in this puppy by next weekend.

A slight change in plans. Talking with my local LFS, he gave me a good price on a custom tank.

This is now going to be a 20g shallow tank, 24" x 16" x 12". Four extra inches front to back will be very nice to have. It should be ready next weekend.

My Tunze filter and Koralia have shipped as well.

Is your custom tank acrylic? Have you considered including an overflow in one corner? That way, you could easily add a sump if you wanted to set up this tank somewhere else in the future.

The tank is glass. I was pushing for starfire, but he won't do such a small tank since he needs to order the glass by the sheet.

The tank is not tempered so if I need to do an overflow later on, it's not an issue. There is zero chance of having a sump where the tank is located at the moment, so I didn't see much of a benefit to doing it now. I'm losing about 2"x4" of footprint to the Tunze Nanocleaner as it is, so that was another factor.

I'll start with the bulbs that the Sundial ship with. 2 x 10k and 2 x Actinics. One I am ready to start adding corals, I'll switch out to something a little more robust.

Picked up 15lbs of LR from an established tank today. I'll supplement with 5-10lbs of hand picked base rock from the LFS this weekend.

My Tunze Nano Cleaner and Koralia Nano also arrived, so I'm still just waiting on my heater, thermometer and the tank itself.

Well I would love to have an update but the tank is late. I should have been running last weekend. Everything else is in, heater, pumps, the nano cleaner, everything. I'm so close to getting this thing running. Grrr...

A different LFS had some cultured base rock for $2.50 a pound, so I grabbed another 12lbs. I might not need it all, but better to have extra I think.

The rock has been curing for about ten days now, and it's had a good scrub. The reek coming off that bucket was horrific. I've since added an air pump to the mix and the smell if much better now. I'll be off and running as soon as the tank shows up.

The tank was delayed, but it's finally here!

Here it is. Ignore the tape, the braces had just been put on that morning, so it was just to help hold them in place until the silicone cured.

Here is the microwave shelf above the tank shelf. You can see why low profile lighting was so important.

And right now, it's leak testing in the basement:

I should be painting the back tonight, and then I'll have to get my saltwater mixing station ready to go in the hopes of getting this tank set up and cycling before the Superbowl starts!

I started here, but I'm on NR more these days I think. Once the 120/190g is up and running that may change a bit.

Get back to work you lazy bum.

Yeah, I started on NR, so if I ever move up to larger tanks I'll probably participate here more.

I am at work, lol. This is what I do... and get paid for it. :P
