About how often were you cleaning out the skimmer/bucket?

Prolly a good idea to drain this outside if possible anyway - floods happen - but typically a skimmer should only be that rank and smelly if its left uncleaned for days or more.

Even if just a little bit of gunk is in there, there is so much air coming out it brings that smell into the room.

Cleaning overflow container about once evey 10 days. It is a very large overflow container.

Yes i am using the thin rubber gasket on dry side.
This is one of the less-celebrated "features" of the vortech design. Take my advice and dont have anything breakable under/near your wet sides. (i.e. coral, heater) Secure the dry sides as advised as well or you may cause damage by one of them falling and hitting something.

Accidents happen, and the "right" bump during some maintenance activity is all that's required to send one or both spiraling down.

(I've lived with a lot of MP40's running on 1/2" glass for a long time, FWIW.)

Trust me, it's the "ripening time" much more than the air flow. It's certainly not practical for everyone (and some skimmer designs facilitate good cleaning much, much more than do others - ack, thumbscrews!!), but daily cleanings should prevent that smell if prevention were to become desirable.

Awesome tank, if I didnt say so already! Going to be one hell of a journey! :-D

Thanks mcarrol, daily cleaning is just not going to happen, the vent outside is working perfect!

received 24 rics & some zoes yesterday. I should have them mounted in a few days. They are in a plastic container in my sump until I can attach them.

How did you vent it out side? Where did you connect the hose to skimmer?

I have the overflow container with pingpong ball in it. Above that there is a hole for air to escape. I drilled the hole a little larger & stuck a barbed fitting in there. We are redesigning it & putting a bulkhead fitting in it.

I'm dumbfounded... What an amazing tank!

What kind of timers are you using for the AI SOL, I am still trying to get my ramp periods perfected? I am curious bc I see 2 controllers.

Thanks for the kind words. I have been thinking about this tank for many years & to finally see it in person is very gratifying. I still say what the heck was I thinking!

One controller is for the 20 AI's on the tank & the other is for the 2 AI's on the sump.

Genius, I think my wife would disagree!!

Right now the timers:

55% white , 65% blue , 65% R Blue start at 7 am ramp up 240 minutes

4:00 I bring them down to 35 40 40

then off at 10:00 pm.

Something like that. I would have to look to be sure.

Amazing tank, I love the rock work, your plumbing and sump look like you put a lot of thought into it. Keep up the great work! I like your chiller enclosure, cool idea.

I would love to have you check out my build when you have a moment.

Thank you! I have similar but I forgot you can leave an open gap like you have between 11am-4pm and the intensity would remain.

Thanks again and keep us posted on the tank. It is definitely a dream come true!!!

Thanks, the plumbing was tough, but almost over. I am in Houston & the chiller had to go outside, it would have heated the room up wayyyy too much..

Do you have a link to your build?

When I had a chiller on my 150 I set it up so the hot air would exit into an extra bathroom, I had the exaust fan set up so it would start whenever the chiller would cycle, it worked well my wife loved the warm bathroom.

A nice macro lens helps, but you can take decent pics with a kit lens. Turn flow off, tripod, shoot straight through the glass, use a remote trigger or the timer function, manual focus.
