I have found (just over the last week or so) that zoas not opening could be as much about flow as it is about lighting. I have always had luck with everything but zoas. They would look good for a while but then start to not open and die off. And always assumed it was lighting/placement in the tank. Recently I had a new zoa rock added that wasn't opening. I moved a powerhead to get more flow in that area of the tank and so so so good (fingers crossed)...they started opening up again.
