Question Led lights

Hey what do you guys think about keeping coral under just basic led lights for saltwater aquariums on ebay? Each strip has 15 leds... If it worked it could be one of the greatest way to light a tank... heres a link http://cgi.ebay.com/Aquarium-Blue-LE...ht_4602wt_1137

It might be ok for a little extra pop or moonlighting but I would be shocked if it had anywhere near enough par to support coral. Those look like 1/4 watt LEDs.

I use these for actinics. I have somewhere around 200 over my 90 and it's barely enough, though the colors it produces are INSANE, especially on zoas. I also run halides and VHO's.

I would think you would want royal blue (455 nm) rather than blue (470nm IIRC) for real pop, but i did not see the wavelength

Yes, but I think you have to design a metal clad board for them not cheap.

$20 buys me five 3-watt royal blue Satistronics, and a length of C-channel aluminum the size of my tank. Add a spare 18.5volt laptop brick, of which I have several laying around, and I have a pretty powerful light that's orders of magnitude more intense than anything discussed here and will easily last over 50k hours.

5mm and 10mm LEDs are pretty much a waste of time on reef tanks. They're cheap for a reason.

Although I agree with you blaster. The OP said he wanted these for color (post 4). And while they might work for the that or moon lights they would not work for lighting the tank. You may also need more than you think for color if the T5 are really bright.

LEDs

I had several email exchanges with the guy selling these and you need quite a few to light a tank. I have a 24 gallon nano and he recommended 2-4' strips of daylight and 1 of the actinic to light my tank. I haven't ordered yet but was thinking about doing so this weekend. I'm planning on mounting in my burnt out hood with silicone sealant. Hope it works.

From what I've read the main problem is sealing the connections against the seawater.

Cool

NO DONT DO IT.

if you are planning on using these as the only source of lighting for your 24g nano you will be very upset because they will not have enough PAR to grow any corals
