I posted this question but about Coral Beauties on the new section, but a number of the responses indicated that between the flame angel and coral beauty angel the coral beauties had a lower risk of choosing to nip at LPS. Maybe it's just a matter of opinion and experience. Some said though the flame angels were more agressive with corals.

I really would love to have either a coral beauty or a flame angel. The LFS employee wouldn't even really let me buy one. well, I asked about it he said if I have corals it will devour them all. And was real adamant that dwarf angels seem more agressive with corals than regular angels.

I think he was full of it, but, I don't want to buy from someone that thinks that rigidly about something like this.

I would love to have a flame or coral beauty angel. We'll see down the road I guess.

Since ALL fish are individuals. its impossible to say with pinpoint accuracy which will damage corals ( ie, my False Perc clown tries to kill new corals, while the Cherub never bothered anything but the other fish). Anyone who gives you 100% assurances in either direction is full of hot air IMHO.
That said, some species of Centropyge are destructive in Reef tanks most of the time ( Lemonpeals, Keyholes, Bi-colors, Heralds, maybe Eibl's though I hear the opposite from some) & should be avoided. Of course, two of that list are hard to acclimate anyway & not beginer fish.

I have a coral beauty in my 40 breeder . He doesnt nip a thing . I DO feed him twice a day though . Hes eats well and is the prettiest fish in my tank IMO. He's got a great personality to boot ! My tank is FULL of corals also .

You hafta remember that since a fish doesnt nip today it doesnt mean it wont nip tomorrow.

Example : Have had my flame for a good year and never nipped a thing. Was in a tank with my huge clam for over 6 months and never bothered it. Moved them both into my main setup in the living room and a month later he started harassing the clam and nipping its mantle.

UPDATE!! the flame is now back the LFS he must of grown up and said "man lets eat everything".
Frank the Flame liked:
acans, duncans, and I think xenia but not sure.
My conclusion is that like other angels they are somewhat reef safe when they are young. Its to bad because he has one of my favourites.

i've got a fairly good sized flame with nothing but lps's and clams. and he's been a model citizen. i used to have some acans and duncans in there but neither liked the tank so i took those two out. i've got all kinds of lps and he hasn't touched a thing

I have several dwarfs (( including a flame )) and the one thing they love are LPS -- though the flame is the 2nd best -- with my blue C. Nox being the best, though still bothers them.

its already been said but each fish has its own personality.

IME Ive tried 2 angels in a 34 and both had to be ejected immediately as they found everything palatable. I keep mostly lps.

emphasis on fat and happy. I have a flame in my mixed reef and feed 2-3 times a day plus nori sheets every couple days, no problem. If I should miss some feedings I know he would rebel and start munching corals.

I also try and feed a good variety. mysis, brine, plankton, pellets & sqiud.
