Hello,

I was cleaning my uv and inside the black colour is coming off, surely this isn’t normal?

UV black inside

Just a thought, but could this be from the carbon you are running?

Common problem. The thing is U.V. is very tough on plastics. What you’re seeing is the inside of your plastic housing getting eaten by the UV. I have a Lifegard sterilizer and it comes with a replaceable inner PVC liner, because this is unavoidable. That black stuff is micro plastics. Harmless. And unfortunately the ocean is full of it (humans suck). But it should just skim out. Keep an eye on it because about 10 years ago I had a UV sterilizer that started to leak because the housing was eaten through. It takes years, but your housing is getting thinner.

I have the same UV (or very similar looking at least) from Jebao. It came with a metal shroud that wrapped around the inside wall. Once when I was cleaning it out and changing the bulbs, I noticed the shroud wasn't in the best condition and was starting to flake off pieces, so I pulled it out. After seeing this post I'm wondering if I should be worried about running without something to protect the plastic housing from the UV light.

I had the same problem with mine. I caught my problem by happenstance but by then it had been killing everything in my tank. took months for the corals that survived to recover. I think they forgot to put the UV resistant chemical in a production run or two of their product because many people use them without problem. Mine is in the landfill
