Dan im trying to mock your system. I bought two lumatek ballast and two radium 250's. Also running two t5 actenics. The light seems so dim. Is this right?

Your perception of the intensity is not something I can say is right or wrong. Lighting is a very personal preference part of reef keeping so opinions are just that, opinions

I have never heard anyone say my lighting seems dim when viewed in person . I have however had them say it is very bright many times, and most are surprised I am running Radiums as the aquarium appears very white with just a hint of blue. This is with 3 lumenarc reflectors and 3 lamps on a 6 foot tank. This is the minimum I would recommend for a 6 foot tank trying to grow acroporas and other reef crest corals. I am running ARO ballasts on the DT but have the same results with a Galaxy adjustable ballast on other systems running in the HQI setting.

Dan

Your tank is so motivating and thanks for the help and suggestions you give to RC. I didnt notice but what ballast are you using to run your 250 Radiums?

Thanks

when you say "Air Dry" in the last photo, is it exposed to air? and do you consider it beneficial for acroporas to be exposed to air for x amount of time? I find it very interesting your photo and the thought. Maybe when they excrete mucus, it helps flush out waste product? As always, thank you for the pictures.

Yes, They are exposed for 3 to 5 minutes when I do water changes. I could remove the sump water and not expose the reef crest acroporas but I believe it does not harm them and may tend to help them grow in a more normal formation and shape. Sensing the surface is near and possibly tabling out more in a more natural shape. Most of my acropora colonies at the top of the reef pillars table as opposed to growing up .

Kalk

Are you still 100% KALK?

I ended removing all of my glass tops and glass on sump and my alk has been stable at 8.5 via kalk stirrer since. Have my Ca Rector at the slowest drip and considering shutting it down.

That's very cool. once my redo grows out I might have to try that out. I find it very fascinating that you can control that with no harmful effects. any more pictures...pic it or it didn't happen

First off i have no idea how i haven't commented on your reef journal until now mate, simply stunning in all aspects that most of us strive for
Second, that feeder clip looks like a small yellow space man feeding the fish from his nether regions - it's just wrong tbh lol........
Lastly, those out of water shots are truly beautiful mate So do you really think that the continual exposure or 'low tide' is in some way telegraphing a signal to the corals that the surface is near and horizontal growth or tabling becomes more common. I find the idea very plausible btw so thanks for bringing up that aspect of your coral husbandry - i love learning these little 'secrets' occasionally and never require actual science before i run with it lol
