Nassarius snail tribal warfare?
Alright, so here's something that I don't get. I started my tank about a year and a half ago, and I started with four nassarius snails. One of them got eaten, but that's beside the point. Anyway, I have tried introducing an additional pair two times since my tank has been running, and in both instances, the three that have already inhabited the tank go right after the newbies. I'm not really sure if it's a freaky gang-bang or some kind of violent initiation, but in either case, they never make it. Why do they do this?

Because the transport and new surroundings cause the new guys to produce stress chemicals, which the others sense in the water. Stress smells like food, so the others swarm them. If you put the new ones in a container in the tank until they've calmed down and adapted (maybe a couple of days) they are less likely to smell like food to your original snails.

Aaah, that makes sense. I guess I can try to section them off for a bit next time I try.
