Black spots on Actopora?
Noticed some black looking spots on Acropora today and am wondering if it's just the polyps that receaded or something worse. I have been raising my whites on my Ocean Revive t247 LED and maybe worried I've reached the limit?

The black spots aren't on the top and well lit part of the coral. So it's unlikely the amount of light is the issue.
But for anybody here to give you feedback that is worth anything at all, you need to give out a LOT more info. I saw from your other post that this isn't the only coral you are having issues with and that you are running your T247 at 100% blue and 65% white. But how deep are these corals? What are your other parameters? How long have you had these corals? The black spots do look like they could be dead polyps. Have you looked really, really close? Could this be do to something else like red bugs?

The only other ones I'm having problems with are the candy canes but that's flow related. My salinity is 1.025, 0 Nitrates, nitrites, or ammonia my PH is a little on the low side about 7.9. My acros are about 8 to 9 inches from the water level so roughly about 18 inches from light. No red bugs I do weekly 25% water changes. Corals have been in there for about 6 months now.

I dont think that is an Acropora, it is either a Stylophora or Pocillopora. And the black spots are nothing but polyps retracted back into the skeleton. They appear black because all of the pigments on the polyp are squeezed into a small space when the the polyp is goes into the skeleton.
You have led lights, so the light shafts are very even, the black dots (retracted polyps) are on the parts of the skeleton that is being shaded by the rest of the coral (you mainly have them on the underside of the "arms"). That probably makes those particular polyps unhappy and they retract back to skeleton. Self-shading is one of the major drawbacks of led fixtures. |
