Debating on a puffer, yes or no?

I have no fish in my tank as of now; I have only 2 corals one is a devil hand the other I think is a frogspawn.

Looking at puffer fish because I think they cool looking. As far as my CUC I have a bunch of snails mixed, and I hear puffers will eat all snails that true?

What size tank? What kind of puffer were you looking at, some get massive. And yes they do eat snails and other crustaceans.

Puffers can be small or huge, so knowing a tank size and what puffer you are considering would certainly be helpful.

I can say I am trying to settle on one last fish for my 65g mixed reef and have just about settled on a Valantini puffer.

I have a Red Sea Max 170 and looking at Valantini puffer; Leopard

Also was looking at Blue Spotted but may not be suitable for my tank as it say min 50 gallons

So far as CUC they will eat them? So basically you have to resupply snails?

They will certainly eat snails and will nip at corals..
They are not reef safe.. Best to avoid them..

I have not read anything really about Valantini nipping corals, but yea it does seems that small snails may be at risk.

IIRC keeping brackish puffers in full blown reefs may pose a challenge, or require considerable acclimation. May be off on that though.

Main reason puffers aren't "reef safe" is they eat snails/shrimp and other crustations. May nip at clams? not certain on that one. I have a porcupine in my 150g, and used to have a spotted puffer in my 65g. Neither even looks at my various corals. I have no snails or shrimp though. I never had a larg CUC to begin with, so as my initial snails slowly dies off over time, I never replenished them, usually just to save money. So eventually, I only had a couple of small snails left. I decided to go for a puffer as I've always liked them instead of adding snails back in. No issues at all.

I think if you get a puffer, you should plan on not having any snails in your tank, or they will all eventually get eaten. If I already had a full CUC, I wouldn't have gotten the puffer. I personally dont mind not having a CUC though. They were fun to watch, but i still had to clean my tank, so didn't see much point other than fun to watch.

I have a blue spotted in my 180, they don't get very large but they will definitely pick off CUC if the critter flips over and makes themselves look tasty. As far as corals, never touches a single thing completely ignores all of it. Great personality and peaceful.
