Waterfall needed?

Does my overflow need a lot of free fall to the internal water level? I have my overflow water level about an inch lower than the display. Will this create issues with surface skimming?

Its just so much quieter that way.

you want different in height between the tank water and the overflow water. any different will do the trick.

I have 0 fall in my weir. Tank height and overflow height are exactly the same, and it doesn't affect the surface skimming one bit.

I prefer it this way as I don't hear the water crashing into the overflow.

yes. I set it up in april 2016 in my shop and transferred all my LR and SPS from my 120 at home and it ran like a top until april 2017 where I left the country for work (it was fine saturday morning) and the guys called first thing monday morning the tank has an inch of water left it in everything is dead and the shop stinks. My overhead heater had kicked on so humidity level was super gross.

I lost all my fish and SPS some were 10-12 years old. it took a year or so before I was ready to set up another tank........
