Following along. Got some real nice tanks... I had some recent issues with bio-pellets myself and would like to see what others are doing... I just switched to an ATS. I'll post some pics of my 240g soon. I've been running it for about 3 weeks...

But I decided to test after I read your question, just to see where I stand. I haven't tested in probably 4 months for either Alk or Ca. Alk: 7 Ca: 440 So I'm a bit out of balance. Thanks for making me test, now I'll probably go chase numbers and get them back to where they should be!

this is a crappy pic with my droid, and i am a total noob being only 10 months into keeping sps, and my tank is nothing like the rest of yours... which are amazing btw... but i thought i would post too, since it is all of you who inspire my system, my goal is to keep it as simple, as far as operation and the amount of equipment used, and as clean as possible meaning algae and detritus... i have only 2 fish with the intent of adding maybe 1 or 2 more smaller ones, and i dose BRS 2 part, and BRS Mag on occasion. i do regular water changes which are not on a regular schedule but should be. also i have a very shallow sand bed "fuge" as well with no macro at all and a good amount of life rock which i really made to look like a fowlr with inverts, though it has no fish but is made to look like a dispay type tank... this is my most recent FTS, but i am in the process of changing my aesthetic approach to highlight the beauty of the corals more, so i will try to get some new ones when its done, really nothing like i have seen before, so i am kind of excited to see the responses...

I don't test or dose for Mag. I also don't direct feed my corals but I do have a lot of fish that I feed regularly both flake, pellets and Rod's food once or twice a week. I'm sure the corals get what they need from the light, residual food and poo.
If my Alk is low, I use baking soda with RO/DI to raise it. I don't test often, like I said it was probably 4 months ago before I read this thread and decided to see where I was at. If things look good, I leave it alone. I don't dose anything else but I do drink vodka sometimes while checking the tank out.

I do a water change every two weeks that I hope keeps up with the mag. I'm not sure on that, I don't test for it. I don't only use baking soda, I also drip super saturated lime 24/7. As far as the baking soda, I don't have a schedule for adding. I didn't know that my Alk was low until testing after reading this thread. I use jdieck's reef calculator to tell me how much to use, last time was 8 tsp. to raise my Alk from 7 - 9.
