Its one of those corals that really falls in btween the general characteristics of the basic rules we use for classification. This debate has gone on and on; either way they are a nice coral specimen

Here is a recent shot of one of mine ( notice how the polyps are one singular formation)

I'm sure its not a Leptastrea. Because the polyps are all wrong for it to be Leptastrea. The second pictures is of it feeding on some left over shrimp.

Well, starting with the fact those categories are very artificial to begin with. They are hobbyist terms that don't REALLY have much validity. There are plenty of LPS corals that are hard to keep. Etc., Etc...
Anyway, specifically, they are like Turbinaria. Sorta MPS if you will! LOL

Took the words right out of my mouth!

Very nice pics everyone! Been eyeing these for a while and I think I just need to pull the trigger. Now to find one locally!

Looking at just the pic I couldnt disagree with you more, the polyps look dead on
Do you have any with them retracted?

Looks like a retracted Galaxea to me. Doesn't look like a leptastrea to me.

Okay, he says Cyph, I say Lep, and you call Galaxea!
A picture of it retracted would end this debate very fast though

Monument, LOL!
Thanks , I like it.
It is hardly a monument it is only the size of a ping pong ball but I got it from a local Fish store.

Do you have any Cyphastreas?

SoonerReefer, Can you tell me how to care for it? I am worried about mine. Even in actinic lights only after an hour or so some of the polyps have thier mouths gaping open. They really look stressed. I have it under a ledge but I think I have to push it in to the cave some more. It seem that it Just can not handle any light. It has only been in the tank for four day but I would imagine it would of acclimated by now. My polyps look very similar to yours . Do your polyps ever extend more or does it always look like that?
Some of the pictures on this thread the polyps open up so much they look like zoanthids.

Any feedback would be appreciated!

mine seem to do best with same conditions for SPS tank. Good water flow, high light. Make sure to keep your parameters up

Wow! Talk about back from the dead.. I haven't seen this thread in ages!
Still love this Favid. well, of course I love favia & all its relatives big and small.
Slowly getting my darned nitrates in check ( error made in setting up my second Reef: Not enough LR. Not going to happen again, this has been a ton of work & still goes on.) so maybe by X-mas I'll have some nice LPS or SPS in the tank. Well, something besides 2 species of mushrooms anyway..

Our meteor shower has been steadily growing eventhough I've been fragging the heck out of it. Almost grows too fast for my liking.

Well, I do not have any SPS. Just Lps's and softies and my tank is a very low tech tank . No skimmer and no dosing. I just keep up with my water changes. I only have 216W of T5's. All my corals are doing great. I hope the tank conditions will be adequate for this coral I really like it.

It still seems to be a little stressed by my lights . Looks good all day long but when it gets close to the end of the photoperiod it looks like some polyps start to spew out some Zooxanthellae.

I love how they don't need alot of light. I have actually seen them grow underneath the frag disc they are on.

On a side note I just discovered a LFS in Rochester, NY that has a yellowish cyphastrea.. I might just have to go back and get myself a piece of that...
