Brainstorming after too many beers, but:

Regardless of design, I would still add a few LEDs just to get a ramping sunrise/sunset function + moonlight. Maybe it's gimmicky, but a lot of people would expect that stuff in a modern fixture. LED power could still be low / "cheap". Use LEDs in the 400-470nm range only. No need for non-blues in a lamp like this.
The lamp itself should be somewhat parabolic (like the one posted above or Giesemann Spectra) to avoid the halide glare.

The immediate "modern" take on MH that comes to mind would be something like this:
(Add more/less T5s to change width, and/or make singe/double ended versions. (assuming single ended would be way more popular in this config...at least I would prefer SE here))

"weak" blue LEDs
T5
...
T5
Halides
T5
...
T5
"weak" blue LEDs

However,
my wet dream would be something like this:

T5
150W DE halides (smaller reflectors than SE)
T5
"weak" blue LEDs
T5
150W DE halides (smaller reflectors than SE)
T5s

Lamp width would be not too far from your current 8xT5 Hybrid. Modern tanks are getting wider and wider

2 channels T5. No dimming required. We have LEDs for that.

Wife-friendly cooling fans.

90ish cm / 39WT5-version: 4x MH
120ish cm / 54WT5-version: 6x MH

MH bulbs are starting to be discontinued.
The 20000 gallon reefer is having problems getting them.

SE or DE doesn’t really matter. I suggested DE only for size requirement. Seems like one could fit nicely in there existing fixture. From a manufacturing stand point the less they have to design and create the more affordable to us
So just slap some DE’s for the prototype right here (in pic) and will go from there.
But I do like your ideas

LET THERE BE LIGHT

So after all this talk and seeing a few tanks same age as mine. I decided to add some metal halides to create the perfect fixture.
LED ramp up to 70 PAR (Bali program)
T5 on for 7 hours 180 PAR
Halides on for 3 hours 225 PAR (just started today so eventually metal halides will be up to 5 hours)

Nice!
Please post frequent updates!

I may be going halides myself in not too long. Love the PandHyp look, but I have my lamp all the way to 90 now and the fans are ruining the overall experience.

I've been thinking about cutting out space for bigger fans, but re-sale value would drop drastically, so ... :/

So I have a Pandora Hyperion SMT 4x80w T5 4x135w led
My question is the T5’s are plugged into a step up step down transformer. Seems I need to replace every 12-18 months because it overheats. It is currently set up to step up to 220v BUT I think my fixture will run 110v to 220v. If that’s the case...... why is the transformer even there? I ask because I originally purchased light as a set up from a different owner...... I assumed this transformer was needed but now I think it’s not really part of the original set up. Are the T5’s more efficient at 220v? Is this needed? I’m in the USA

@mrtint - Pandora lamps with 80W T5 tubes were sold by our former distributor with additional step-up transformers because in past we were not available to buy 2x80W T5 110V ballasts in EU. If you have 220V ballasts they would not work with 110V.
You could check which model of T5 ballasts are mounted in your lamp but you will have to open lamp housing to check this.

Best regards
Pacific Sun Service.

The Pacific Sun Pandora hyperion S, has 4x 54w t5s, can the t5s be turned off/on individually? or do they all have to be on or off.

Hi
Of course - in our hybrids lamps all channels can be controlled separately (hybrids with 4 bulbs have 2 channels with 2 bulbs on each, hybrids with 8 bulbs - 4 channels).
From technical/electrical point of view controlling single T5's can't be switched off/on.
Regards

Przemek

Been a while since I've been on this site but just set my Pandora S back up after a few year hiatus and read through the whole thread to catch up! Shame we lost all the info when PS stopped sponsoring. You'd think RC could pull all that out and make it available. In any event, I uploaded the new firmware and downloaded the new software and everything functioning well with the lamp. The latest Firmware was still 1.7android which is a couple years old. Any update on when we'll have some new stuff?

LEDs at 100%

would there be any issues with running the LEDs at 100%
like shortening the life of the LEDs?

i've had LED fixtures in past where running at max ended up burning LEDs out.

FWIW i am running 2 fixtures of 36" Hyperion S 8bulb T5 with 2 x 75w LEDs

Running at 100% will almost always shorten their life unless they are underdriven on purpose. How big is your tank?

Hey,

I have a 300 peninsula. And I've spied in your sig you have a 300 too!
It's 24"D and is sps dominate. So since i had opted for the 75w LED panels i was just curious if i was "wasting" and potential light power. I will set them to 90%.

All this time I've just been running the Bali program, i am just now going to play with the par table to create a night time "coral pop". Hopefully it will work well so i wont have to go the route of supplemental LED strips like Reefbrite, Orphek or Illumagic.

Help! Disaster!

Przemek,

Recently i have been having issues with a bank of T5s, same as i discussed earlier in the thread somewhere.

Anyhow, it was suggested to tap on the relay as it sometimes gets stuck. While that has resolved the issue for me several times in the past, this time i heard a pop sound and the entire fixture lost power.

It will not power up anymore!

I've opened up the fixture, but i'm not a DYIer or an Electrician, so i have no idea what to look for.

Everything looks fine, nothing looks burnt or blown.

Przemek, please advise ASAP!!!

I am having trouble connecting to my lamp

Przemek,
I have been operating the lamp since around 2012
I do not connect to the lamp very often, maybe 1 -2 times per year
I recently conmnected to it just fione the other day
But I want to change a setting and I spent ALL DAY yesterday troubleshooting kit and I cant connect since.
I am using same desktop, same bluetooth, same app, same location that I have always done. In the past when I had trouble connecting I would always get it to work by rebooting my computer or rebooting the lamp and then I would be able to connect. Yesterday I tried everything ALL DAY LONG.
I want to be able to get new firmware to use my android but first things first, I can NOT connect to the lamp all day.

CAN U HELP?
ANy Chance you can call me to discuss what I have tried to be more effieict

I have an older Hyperion S 3145W
Manufactured in 2015.

Very happy with it, worked very well; and I've gotten good support in the past. Putting that out there since this is a public forum.

Does anyone know where/if I could get this repaired? I am in the US (New Hampshire)

One of the LED arrays does not light. And the T-5's no longer light as well (did try new bulbs, so not a bulb issue).

Or has it reached end of life?

Reporting back. Support got right back to me. They suggested checking the power supplies... and I am embarrassed to report that one of my power supplies had gotten unplugged. They advised that the T-5's use regular 2x54W ballasts - and they would be happy to work with whomever I get to replace these!

I've always been very happy with the light. Its worked very well, is obviously high quality and it makes sense esthetically for our setup - especially that the cables come out of the side vs the top.
