The new Maxspect Recurve has some very interesting features and a good modern looking fixture. I like the wide 'wings' and adjustable angles. The hazy lenses and grouped leds should all but eliminate any disco effect.
I'd like to know more about the leds themselves and how many of each color and where they are in the array. I also wonder about the cost...

I found out that the leds in the 'wings' are blue, deep blue, red and UV...
I had hope that this fixture was going to help with the issue of shadows under ledges or coral growth. Which is why I'm looking to add a t5 fixture to the front edge of my led fixture. But the wings have no white leds. And no green to mix with the blues, red and violet to try and even mix your own white light. That's more than a bit disappointing to me. With good white light over the center of the tank, the blues in the wigs will have virtually no affect on shadows IMHO. And no word on which brand of leds or wattage... not to mention prices. Time will tell. I think the wing idea is really creative and could be a great advantage to the straight line light from most led fixtures. But I have serious doubts that this will resolve that old problem. Still, it's an interesting new design.

According to the comments in the unavailable link, max spect responded it will be available Q2 2017. One my one Facebook reef friends apparently got a couple of unit as a tester. I have ask him if he is allowed to give more details as I want to know the width to really understand coverage To many times led manufactures are over estimating coverage.

So for a small fortune you will get a razor with some more limited razors bolted to the sides. The buzz words were hilarious, 'haze rendering', 'nano blend', 'variable geometry', 'Mitsubishi acrylic'. Stick a couple of T5 bulbs either side of your LED and you have a better product for half.

But if your led fixture is small (mine is only 1" tall), and it's not inside a canopy, adding t5 fixtures gets pretty ugly pretty quickly! I'm looking at adding a SunBlaster Nano t5 to my Reef Breeders Photon V2 and it's barely acceptable looking to me and I'm not really that picky about looks. And I still don't know for sure how I'm going to attach it to the Photon V2?

Another issue that occurred to me is that if you tip the back side down much, the leds will be shining out at you, unless you have a canopy.

I don't know why people keep trying to emulate T5 with point source lighting. It doesn't matter that you add more to the side, they still shoot a cone of light in one direction. You'd be better off with E5, but they might be down on PAR a little.

Reef Builder takes a look at it. For such a slick looking unit, there is just something totally unremarkable about it. |
